Saturday’s Storm

Here in southeast Virginia, tornadoes are a rare occurence.  I can only remember about a half dozen or so ever hitting around our area.

But Saturday evening,  severe storms came through Virginia and North Carolina, and what appeared to be a tornado caused considerable damage within about 10 miles of us. The majority of it was downed trees, power lines, etc. But many houses were also damaged.

This is the home of friends of ours. They were hunkered down in the tub during the storm. Can you tell that some of their furniture is still in place, even though the back wall is completely gone? It reminds me of furniture inside a doll house.

Their vehicles (and garage) were destroyed.

Just across the highway, an elderly lady was upstairs in this house, but, miraculously, was uninjured.

And in a nearby area, this beautiful old home was damaged.

What warmed my heart was the number of vehicles in their yard. It reminded me of an old-time barn raising; neighbors helping out neighbors in need.

Even though our immediate area wasn’t in the line of storms, it was scary enough for us. I can’t imagine what it was like for the folks living in these houses.  No one was injured in the houses I’ve shown here, but within an hour of us, there were three deaths associated with this storm.

We’re thankful the storm missed us, but our hearts go out to those who were in its path.
