A few weeks ago, one of Motor Man’s friends called and asked if we would consider allowing a fundraiser to be held on the property at our shop. The cause would be for a mutual friend (one of Motor Man’s former employees who is fighting cancer). The idea was to have a car show and serve barbecue.
Motor Man and I immediately said yes. And the preparations began.
After several committee meetings and too many phone calls, texts and emails to count, the event was held Saturday, and it was an unbelievable success.
Here are just a few of the reasons for that:
- We had about 40+ volunteers. And not one ego among them.
- We had a competent organizer who took none of the credit but gave all to his team
- We had amazing sponsors who donated barbecue, hot dogs, cole slaw, potato chips, soft drinks, water, ice, and gift bags and goodies for the car show entrants
- We had a hobbyist dee-jay who donated his time to provide music
- We had over 100+ car enthusiasts who gave a minimum donation of $10 each to display their vehicles (from a 1925 Model T to a 2023 Hellcat)
- We had racers who brought their race car/race boat to be on display
- We had a record-holding motorcycle racer who signed autographs and posed for pictures
- We had a local hot air balloonist and crew who donated their time for tethered balloon rides for a donation. Sadly, the winds didn’t cooperate for that to happen.
- We had a fire department next door who graciously opened their rest rooms to the public and put the flag on display on their ladder truck
Motor Man and I have never really been involved with an event of this size, and we are honored to have been included. This is an aerial photo taken from a drone.

Below is a slide show containing a few pictures from the day.
And when our friend, Tim, wins his battle with cancer, Motor Man and I are ready to host a party that makes this event pale in comparison. I’m sure every member of our fundraising committee will be ready to help.
