Cat Rescue, But Not From A Tree

I have a ‘feel good’ story to share today.

**All the information and photos in today’s post were taken directly from the Newport News (VA) Fire Department Facebook page, “NNFD-On Location” and the Newport News Animal Welfare’s Facebook page.**

Last Wednesday, a citizen called the NN Animal Welfare agency to report this, a kitty on the ledge of a concrete support on the interstate. This is about 30 minutes or so from us.

The Animal Welfare folks immediately called the fire department:

Doesn’t it look as if she’s yelling: “Help me!”?

To the rescue. The firefighter reported that when he first approached her, she moved away from him, but then, when he reached out his hand toward her, she gave him a ‘head butt’.  He was then able to put her in the carrier.

They discovered that the kitty was wearing a non-breakaway collar, and one of her hind legs had gotten caught in the collar. That had created a wound, which was infected. She was also dehydrated (who knows how long she’d been out there in this heat, rain, etc.) and emaciated, weighing barely three pounds.

“Ledge Kitty”, as she was nicknamed, had surgery and is reported to be recovering nicely. This picture was taken as she awoke from a nap. The caption was that she wanted to thank everyone for all their help and good wishes.

No one knows how the kitty came to be in that predicament. We can only hope that a human wasn’t to blame.

On Thursday, Ledge Kitty went home with her foster mom, where I just know she’s now comfortable, safe, well-fed and loved. And I hope she’ll know nothing less for the rest of her life.

Feel better soon, sweet kitty. And thank you to those hero firefighters for not only everything else they do, but also for helping to save that tiny life.
