See Ya, Ophelia!

We had an uninvited guest in our area this past weekend: tropical storm Ophelia.  From all the type the media bombarded us with last week , we were expecting quite the storm. In all my many years, I’ve never heard the word “cyclone’ in any of our weather forecasts. Thankfully, we just had some gusty winds, heavy rain and minor tidal flooding.  Some folks  in our area lost electricity for a brief period of time, but ours just flickered.

Our little town is located on the Pagan River, which is fairly small, but of course, floods during tropical storms. There are also several small creeks all around the area.

Once the worst of the storm was over, Motor Man and I went for a little ride around town.  This is a street in the town of Smithfield. That’s one of Smithfield Foods headquarter’s buildings to the left.

Just a few miles from where we live is the tiny village of Rescue, located on Jones Creek.

The dock in the foreground is completely underwater. You can barely see the outline. I took this from the top of the  bridge in the previous picture.

And finally, a video I took of us as we drove through flood waters in front of a local restaurant/marina/hotel.  We were in our SUV, and the waters had subsided. The street had been completely closed previously in the day. Motor Man says as long as he can see the lines in the center of the street, we’ll be okay.

And let me just say that Microsoft, Google and WordPress have combined to make creating and sharing videos somewhat of a 6-step process, where it used to be one! And I was unable to remove the sound, so you can hear us chatting about why those two women were out in the water???

We are so thankful that Ophelia didn’t treat us any worse than she did.  Now, how many days til the end of hurricane season???

  1. We are also happy to wave BYE BYE to Ophelia…..we had no flooding here – no water around here other than lakes and streams – but we did get a lot of wind and when you live in a woods (practically!) it’s a worry. We lucked out. So glad you all were OK. Hurricane season is not over yet AND they are “watching” two more tropical systems in the Atlantic both of which will “probably” not make it to the coast of the United States – THANKFULLY!

  2. bye, ophelia …..
I misread your caption before the first photo as “one of Smithfield Floods headquarters ” … ; )

  3. I’m glad you’re okay. I’m trying to work out just where you are in the US. And by the way there was no video attached.

  4. Whew! Glad it turned out to be less than predicted. Those storms can be nasty!

  5. Glad it wasn’t worse than that. But honestly, I get so tired of the media hyping up every weather system that comes along. Here in our neck of the woods, they make a simple snow in winter time sound like it’s going to be a blizzard. Ridiculous.

  6. I was thankful that Ophelia didn’t leave us any more trouble than the high waters and a few hours without power.
