Virginia’s Eastern Shore From The Air

Motor Man and I usually take day trip on the weekend,  and one of our favorite destinations is the Eastern Shore of Virginia.  A few weeks ago, Motor Man mentioned to a friend of ours, who lives there, that we would like to take a small plane tour to see the area from the air.

That friend just happens to know someone who owns a small plane, and gave that person’s contact info to Motor Man.

Saturday was the perfect day for a flight: mostly sunny, practically no winds and warm temps. We met our pilot, Sid, at the Accomack County Airport.

I must admit that I was a bit nervous: I always am when we fly. But, as  soon as we were off the ground, I relaxed and enjoyed the scenery.

Although much of the view was made up of the many waterways, we could see several tiny towns. This is Saxis, Va to the left.

A former Coast Guard station, now privately owned.

You may be familiar with Nasa’s Flight Facility at Wallops Island, where many rockets are launched.  This is the launch tower:

The causeway to the town of Chincoteague, where the annual pony swims are held.

Cape Charles is one of our favorite little towns to visit.

Nearby, there is a breakwater, made up of nine concrete ships from the World War II era.  Years ago, Motor Man fished near those ships.

Following a very smooth landing, Sid took a picture of Motor Man and me.

The three of us laughed about one of my favorite sayings: “Flying is the second greatest thrill known to man: landing is the first’.

Thanks, Sid, for a wonderful experience.
