Since we celebrated Thanksgiving recently, my memory today was triggered by a photo taken on Thanksgiving day in 2001.
As many of you know, Motor Man lost his first wife many years ago after a long struggle with cancer. Her only brother was killed in an auto accident two months later, and her father passed away six months after that.
After all that tragedy, Motor Man stepped in to help his mother-in-law, Mrs. E., in any way he could. When he and I began seeing each other, she welcomed me with open arms. As the years went by, and she was no longer able to drive, I took her for doctors’ appointments, hair appointments and grocery shopping. And Motor Man and I often took her for rides and to get ice cream. And we called her every evening to check on her.
One of his sisters and her husband hosted the Thanksgiving meal in 2001, and Mrs. E. was included. It was a warm day, and Motor Man snapped this picture of the two of us in our car….with the top down.
I wasn’t sure what year this was taken, but the info on the photo file showed 2001. When I zoomed in, I saw that I was wearing just my engagement ring on my left hand. The file info is correct: Motor Man proposed earlier in November that year, and we were married the following February.
Mrs. E. lived to celebrate her 90th birthday six years later and passed away on Christmas Eve that same year.
She was a sweet, but feisty, lady, and we have many special memories of her.
And this photo always makes me smile.
