Monday Memories: Childhood Christmas

For my Monday posts this month, I thought it would be appropriate to focus on some Christmas memories.

I’ve shared this picture here on the blog before, but it’s been a while. There aren’t too many photos taken of me at Christmas; I don’t think Mom ever owned a camera, and I’m pretty sure this was taken by my sister, Rose.

There are so many memories attached to this little snapshot. I’m pretty sure that box contained a set of miniature cookware…little aluminum pots and pans. I still remember those.

I have the desk that is in the corner behind me (I’m looking at it as I type this). And on top of that was our very small tv set.

We always had a live cedar tree, cut down by my brother-in-law in the woods behind their house. Of course, the tinsel on the tree was a constant in that era.

At the top left of the photo, you can see a portion of a Christmas card. Mom always taped all the cards we received around the windows and doors in our den.  I think more folks sent cards back in Christmases past.  There’s a sheer curtain visible just to the right of the tree.  And that looks like a bowl of fruit on the floor beside my right arm, although I can’t imagine why it would be under the tree??? Perhaps a gift to mom from someone.

On my bottom lip, there appears to be MY ever constant ‘fever blister’ (cold sore).  In several of my school photos, I’m sporting one of those painful afflictions. Although I had a few even after I reached adulthood, thankfully, for me, they’re now a thing of the past.

Recently, I saw this meme on Facebook, and it really struck home with me.  My dad died when I was just a baby, so it was all on Mom to make my Christmases special.

And although she made possible the magic of Santa, she also made sure that I learned the real Reason we have Christmas.

  1. What a sweet memory and an all-so-true saying. I love the way our families kept Christ at the center of Christmas.

  2. Oh yes, your photo looks very similar to photos of my childhood Christmases too. Those were the days – simple but sweet, weren’t they?

  3. A sweet memory for sure….I love the meme because like most of us, Mom was the one who took care of birthdays and special occasions – my Dad was just along for the ride!

  4. I like how you talked about the different aspects of this photo – amazing how sometimes a picture can paint a thousand words.
