Windowpane Wednesday: Something New At Our “Zoo”

Those of my readers who’ve been following the blog for a while know that we have lots of different species of wildlife that visit our area.

Deer, mallards, Canada geese, rabbits, raccoons, waterfowl, turtles….have I left out anyone?  And that list just includes those that are actually in our yard.

Out at the marina, we can add harbor seal to that list, and as of this week: otters. Neither of us had ever seen them here before, but Monday morning, there were three out on the dock.

I didn’t get the best pictures, but it was fun to watch them scampering along the at the marina.

I had my camera lens zoomed as far as it would go.

It almost seemed that they knew where they were going. They had determination!

They’re odd-shaped little critters.

Later, we drove out to our ‘point’, and they were swimming.  We only saw three on the dock, but it appears there are four here in the water.

When Marshall was a little boy, we used to go to the Virginia Living Museum in Newport News. There were a couple of otters there, and we always enjoyed watching them play.

Wonder what we’ll see next here at the zoo?

  1. Cool! I love otters – they are absolutely like little kids when they play and I hear they are sweet and caring “parents” when they have little ones….I’ve seen photos proving that. They’re pretty fast in the water too so will avoid the boats well. I hope they do well there!

  2. You just never know who will show up, do you? They are cute, but not welcome in local farm ponds. Mom had some show up this fall right after she’d restocked. They’re avid fishermen!

  3. That’s really cool …. I know I’ve never seen them down there !

  4. Just another day at Dianna & Motor Man’s wildlife refuge! How fun!
