“What Is It” Wednesday

I’m considering this for a possible new blog theme: posting a photo of something in my collection of vintage items and sharing what I know about it.  And possibly, in some cases, asking if YOU know what it is .

For many years, one of my hobbies has been collecting antique vintage items. Thankfully, Motor Man encourages this addiction habit, and enjoys taking me in search of more stuff I don’t need.  Sometimes I recognize what an item is right away, others I’m puzzled about until I can research, and still others remain a mystery even with research.

Today, I’m sharing an item I bought last weekend at a barn sale. The top (about 13 inches tall) is cast iron, and the bottom part (the ‘saucer’) is metal.

Any guesses?

The woman having the barn sale said that she had done a search using “Google Lens” on her phone, and it showed that this was a stove warmer. Back in the day, folks put whatever food they wanted to keep warm in the bottom section, put the top part on and placed it on their wood or coal stove. The price marked on it at the sale was $30, but I asked if they would take less. And they agreed to $20. (Score!)

I’m a member of a Vintage Gardening Facebook page, and on Monday, one of the members just happened to post a photo of something similar he had recently acquired: a decorative stove finial.  And it looked very much like the top part of my find. I shared photos of mine with him, and he suggested that perhaps the bottom part was the lid of an old milk can.

And he was right:

(Another customer at the barn sale was looking at this with me, and she mentioned that perhaps the two pieces didn’t originally ‘go together’).

But I’m guessing that the original owners probably ‘made do’ with what they had, and used this to keep things warm on the stove.

So what do you think about this possible new blogging idea?  Would you like to see an occasional post about something interesting in my collection of old stuff/junque/vintage items?
