Poetic Thursday: So Many Memories

Thursdays mean poetry here on These Days.  Our friend, Pam, and her kitties, Teddy and Angel Sammy, at Two Spoiled Cats, gave us this photo for our inspiration today:

Here’s my poem:

So Many Memories

What do you see when you look at this heap?
Fords, Chevys, maybe some Jeeps?

There’s more to the picture than meets the eye;
keep reading, and I think you’ll see why.

A tiny newborn’s first ride home
meant sweet reflections in that chrome.

Some were ‘daily drivers’ in local carpools:
shuttling little ones to games and to school.

Nervous teenagers on their first date;
get her home safe, but don’t be late.

On a Saturday in the middle of June,
one transported a couple on their honeymoon.

One got me to work and back home again;
that car knew every bump in Highway 10.

Someone’s first car: the source of their pride.
Sadly, one may have been someone’s last ride.

Now they’re crushed, but there’s still more to do:
they’ll all be recycled into something new.

As I was writing the last part of my poem, I thought I’d better research what really happens to cars after they’re crushed. I found it very interesting. If you’d like to read it, here’s the link.

  1. WOW!!! You took an ‘ugly’ picture and made it beautiful. You so have a way with words that speaks to the heart. Thanks.

  2. You’re right – each car would have a history and memories for its’ owner…..so many things beyond being transportation. Great job with a wonderful poetic perspective! Sweet………..very!

  3. Very well done …. a perfect example of ‘sonder’ in poetry …

  4. That was such an excellent poem! Mom tried the link and it didn’t work, and she too wants to know what happens to crushed cars. She’ll try the link again from the computer, and if it doesn’t work she’ll do some of her own research. Thank you for sharing that thoughtful poem. 5. I have to agree with one of your commenters — you took an very unattractive photo and turned it into beautiful words. Well done!

  6. Great poem!
