What Is It Wednesday: Hankies

I found the item I’m sharing today at a local antique shop a few weeks ago.

Handkerchiefs were part of my life when I was a little girl. On the rare days that I bought my lunch at school, I took lunch money (a quarter and a nickel) that Mom tied up in the corner of a handkerchief.

But I never knew that there was such a thing as a soiled hankie ‘receptacle’. Ours just ended up in the clothes hamper until wash day, which was always on Monday. And on an old wringer washing machine.  Google Lens brings up no similar items to this, so perhaps it was one of a kind? It appears to be handmade of heavy cardboard covered in fabric with embroidered embellishments.

Although we certainly won’t be using it for soiled handkerchiefs, it’s a cute little vintage touch in our laundry room.

And let’s all remember to be thankful for tissues, shall we?
