I found the item I’m sharing today at a local antique shop a few weeks ago.

Handkerchiefs were part of my life when I was a little girl. On the rare days that I bought my lunch at school, I took lunch money (a quarter and a nickel) that Mom tied up in the corner of a handkerchief.
But I never knew that there was such a thing as a soiled hankie ‘receptacle’. Ours just ended up in the clothes hamper until wash day, which was always on Monday. And on an old wringer washing machine. Google Lens brings up no similar items to this, so perhaps it was one of a kind? It appears to be handmade of heavy cardboard covered in fabric with embroidered embellishments.
Although we certainly won’t be using it for soiled handkerchiefs, it’s a cute little vintage touch in our laundry room.
And let’s all remember to be thankful for tissues, shall we?

Some clever lady made that I’m sure……it’s cute! I would imagine kids would love using it for their dirty hankies back in the day though. I remember my Mom would get grumpy if I left a dirty hanky in a pocket, etc. so we always put them in the clothes hamper. She’d go berserk over “collecting them” like this – no sense of humor! LOL

That is adorable! I have never seen one before so it was new for me. I would think it would get kind of gross if it was for real soiled hankies! Fun find!
wouldn’t want to think about what these would’ve been like during the covid era …. nice find .. it could be a piece of folk art !
PERFECT!!! nod to another day when hankies were the norm. I LOVE it. I’ve never seen one before, and I still wash hankies – my husband’s!!!
I’ve never seen anything like that either. Believe it or not, I have an entire box (shirt box sized) full of handkerchiefs. They were little treasures that my mother and grandmother had when they participated in a hankie exchange back in the 50’s I believe. It was like a chain letter but participants sent handkerchiefs.
What a unique and wonderful fine!
