Windowpane Wednesday: Here For The Food

In the area outside our kitchen windows, we have a couple of hanging bird feeders.

We also have this ‘stake feeder’, which was a gift from my friend, Bev, several years ago.  In the summer, I usually fill it with water, but in the winter, I put out sunflower seeds.

On a recent morning, with snow still on the ground, I spotted this little bird checking out the buffet. My bird nerd friend, Donna, can correct me if I’m wrong, but I think this is a junco.  My mom always referred to them as snowbirds, and it was her firm belief, that if you spotted one, snow wasn’t far behind. I must admit, I did see a couple at the feeders a day or two before our last snowfall.

I waited for a while, hoping for a picture of a real bird in the feeder, and soon, this little one obliged. I can’t tell if this is a sparrow or a finch. But I’m betting someone will comment with the answer!

Putting out bird seed and filling bird baths (we have two that keep the water from freezing) is a lot of work when it’s cold, snowy and/or rainy, but seeing the birds enjoying them is certainly worth the trouble.
