Windowpane Wednesday: Here For The Food

In the area outside our kitchen windows, we have a couple of hanging bird feeders.

We also have this ‘stake feeder’, which was a gift from my friend, Bev, several years ago.  In the summer, I usually fill it with water, but in the winter, I put out sunflower seeds.

On a recent morning, with snow still on the ground, I spotted this little bird checking out the buffet. My bird nerd friend, Donna, can correct me if I’m wrong, but I think this is a junco.  My mom always referred to them as snowbirds, and it was her firm belief, that if you spotted one, snow wasn’t far behind. I must admit, I did see a couple at the feeders a day or two before our last snowfall.

I waited for a while, hoping for a picture of a real bird in the feeder, and soon, this little one obliged. I can’t tell if this is a sparrow or a finch. But I’m betting someone will comment with the answer!

Putting out bird seed and filling bird baths (we have two that keep the water from freezing) is a lot of work when it’s cold, snowy and/or rainy, but seeing the birds enjoying them is certainly worth the trouble.

  1. I thoroughly enjoy watching the crowds of critters through the winter especially on and around our bird feeder. There’s an occasional squabble but for the most part they are very polite sharing the seed.

  2. We keep our feeder and suet cake holder filled for our feathered friends too.

  3. We’ll put peanuts out for the cardinals and blue jays, mostly, but we have other visitors from time to time !

  4. My husband feeds the birds, and I enjoy the results – bird watching. We have quite a variety too.
