He’s Not Warren

One evening last week, Motor Man and I were having dinner at a nearby Cracker Barrel.  We hadn’t noticed the couple sitting at the table across the aisle from us.  But when they finished their meal and stood up to leave, they came over to our table.

The man spoke to my Motor Man, then asked: “How are you enjoying retirement?”.   Motor Man answered that he hasn’t retired.   At this point, I thought perhaps the man was someone that MM knows, but didn’t recognize. And I knew that MM felt the same way when he asked the man what he did for a living.  (That’s his way of getting a hint about who someone is if he thinks he should know them.) We don’t believe that the man ever said his name. But then, he mentioned seeing Motor Man’s granddaughter recently. That was our first clue that something was amiss: MM doesn’t have a granddaughter.

Then the man and his wife both said: “Aren’t you Warren?”.  And of course, Motor Man answered that he wasn’t.

As it turns out, “Warren” (apparently before his retirement) owned a service station in the area where MM grew up, not far from the Cracker Barrel. And the couple that had stopped to speak to us live in that area. The two of them and Motor Man know many of the same people, and MM knows where “Warren’s” service station is.

Apparently Motor Man bears a strong resemblance to “Warren” and even sounds like him when he talks.

The four of us ended up having a good laugh about it, but I couldn’t help but think they weren’t really convinced that this isn’t “Warren”.

Nope….not Warren.

Y’all sure made them feel comfortable. Now that’s life.

  5. If you see someone that looks like MM, say, “Hi, Warren.” Tell him you went to high school together.

  6. What a pleasant encounter – new friends.
