That Would Have Hurt

Friday afternoon, Motor Man and I left home to go run a couple of errands. As soon as we pulled out of the driveway, we remembered something we needed to get from inside the house. Rather than opening the roll-up garage doors, I decided to just go in through the front door.

As I came back out, something caught my eye: an osprey carrying a HUGE limb in his talons. I’m sure it was on the way to the nest being built at the marina near our house.  Evidently I spooked him, because, suddenly, he dropped it, and it missed hitting our Tahoe by less than two feet.

But what concerned Motor Man (and me) even more, was the fact that I probably missed getting that limb dropped on my head by about ten seconds. I’m standing where the limb landed, and was walking across the porch when the osprey dropped it.

Oh, and we weighed that stick…just a little less than a pound and a half.  That doesn’t really sound like much, but imagine the strength in their talons for a bird to be able to carry that.

We’re thankful that was just a close call, because I do believe that would have hurt.

  1. They are big birds and their nests are big so that “stick” looks like a perfect fit for the nest…..guess when you live on the water it pays to “keep an eye on the sky” with those big nest builders flying around…..nobody enjoys having part of a tree dropped on their head!!!! 🙂

  2. That is impressive … on more than one count ! – and we don’t know exactly how far up it was when it was dropped … so, yep – close one !

  3. Wow, it’s amazing that an osprey can carry a stick that large. Thank goodness it didn’t hit you.

  4. WOW, what a close call. It is amazing the size of the branches that they use. They and eagles build huge nests. Glad it didn’t hit you or the Tahoe.

  5. Oh my gosh, thank goodness it missed you. That could have caused you some serious pain.
You know, I forget how strong the big birds are until I see something like the stick you’re holding. Mother Nature sure has some wonderful ways to help the big and small creatures survive.

  6. Oh my! I’m glad you didn’t step off your porch any sooner.
