It’s been a while since I’ve shared a “What Is It” post, but I found a little something interesting at an antique mall over the weekend.
This sweet little cupboard stands only about 13 inches high. It’s the latest of several that I’ve been collecting over the years.
It’s usually difficult to determine whether or not these are salesman’s samples or doll furniture. Some that I have are very well made, and I think it’s possible that, back in the day, they were taken around to various stores/shops by salesmen as examples of furniture that could be ordered.
But this one is different. It was very inexpensive, and the workmanship isn’t as exact as some of my others. The sale tag referred to it as a “toy chest”. This isn’t the best photo, but I took it to show how uneven the top is. I don’t believe it was broken, because the edges are too smooth for that to be the case. The undersides of the drawers are very rough. But the condition of the little mirror tells me that it’s old.
So I think this was a work of love by a dad or a grandpa as a gift for a little girl. I’m hoping that she loved it, and I think it’s a sweet addition to my collection.
