What Is It Wednesday: Cuckoo Spit

Quite a different post for “What Is It Wednesday” this time. Not an antique, but rather a nature pic.  I learned something new this week, thanks to my son, Marshall.

Last weekend, I’d gone out to deadhead some of my gazanias, and noticed these round balls of what looked to be foam on the stems.

Here’s a better picture:

When Marshall and I were together Monday morning, I showed the photo to him.  And he taught me how to use AI to get info about a picture you have on your phone.

And this is what we learned about those balls of ‘foam’:

So I was looking at cuckoo spit? Who even knew there were such things as spittlebugs? Or spittlebug nymphs? But I’m glad my plant could provide them a safe space.

And, thanks, Marshall, for teaching your mom something new.

  1. Well now – at my “advanced age” I’ve learned something NEW! I had no idea – I haven’t seen any of those mini-mothballs in my garden but at least now I’ll know what they are if I see them! Thanks to you and Marshall……..there’s always something to learn.

    Hugs, Pam

  2. Ewww, I say. I’ve seen that on plants here too and wondered what it was. Thanks for informing me about cuckoo spit, I think. 😉

  3. Who knew ? well, I suppose somebody did ! ; )

  4. Well, you taught me something too – the name of the plant, which I have and didn’t know-and that cuckoo spit exists and what it is. WOW!!!! Who knew?
