Today, we celebrate not only New Year’s Day, but also the birthday of my Motor Man.
If you’re a new follower, you may not be aware of this interesting story surrounding Motor Man’s ‘birth week’: his dad was in boot camp in Texas. He knew, of course, that he was going to be a dad, but didn’t know his son had been born. On his way to New York to ship overseas for World War II, “Pop” stopped for a day or two to visit his young wife. (Rumor has it he was AWOL for those few days, but I have there’s no proof.) Imagine his surprise when he arrived to find that his wife and newborn son were still in the hospital.
Motor Man’s mom insisted on being released from the hospital in order to spend a few precious hours with her husband before he left for the war. I’ve always thought that this is such a special picture.

And a later picture of Baby Motor Man with his mom.

Toddler Motor Man sporting an adorable little cap.

With a fish almost as big as he is.

And fast forward just a few years. For Christmas this year, one of my gifts to Motor Man was a book of information and vintage photos of his hometown of Newport News.

Happy Birthday, Motor Man!
