My Northern Lights Experience

Thursday is usually poetry day here on the blog, but today, I came up empty handed headed for a poem today. So, instead, I thought I’d share my experience with this week’s Northern Lights event here in our part of the country.

Living in southeast Virginia, the opportunity to  possibly see the Northern Lights this week was a really big deal. Motor Man recalls seeing them once when he was a child. Tuesday evening was our first chance, so I went out on our deck, looked to the north, and saw nothing.  Just on a whim, I snapped a picture with my cell phone.

An hour or two later, I happened to check my phone gallery, looking for another photo, and, surprise!  I had actually captured the Northern Lights.  Admittedly, a blurry picture,  because I didn’t know at the time to use the night mode on my phone. But still, I had a picture!

We had another opportunity last night, and the experts were divided on whether the show would be better than Tuesday night or not.  Our time span was from just after sunset to around midnight.  I went out several times during the evening, with not much to show for my efforts.

When we turned on the 10 pm news, the meteorologist said that the ‘show was beginning’ and  it may continue until around 1 am.  So, I went trudging out in our yard (it was chilly!) using the flashlight on my phone.  As I was walking as far out as I could out in our side yard, I caught motion out of the corner of my eye.  Deer, moving away from me. I snapped a couple of pictures of the sky, and started back toward the house.  And then, I heard….snorting. Deer snorting.  Buck deer snorting.

Remembering that I’d just read earlier this week about a woman in North Carolina being attacked by a buck, I was, needless to say, very anxious to get back to the house.  Thankfully, the snorting didn’t come closer.

And this was my photo from last night.

And, with that, our Northern Lights excitement comes to an end.
