Monday Morning Mews: Crunchy’s Adventure

If you’re in need of encouragement to follow your local Facebook community pages, this may be it:

Saturday afternoon, I read a post on one of our sites from a young man named Nickolas.  He and a friend had been at a local wildlife management area, which is open to the public for hunting, fishing, hiking, etc .  Out of nowhere, a very friendly Siamese cat approached them. There was no one else around, so Nickolas and his friend took the kitty to our county’s animal shelter.

A short while after Nickolas made the post, someone replied to it and said that, a few weeks ago, they’d seen a post on a local “lost and found pets” page that a Siamese cat had been lost in that area. One reader then tagged the original poster in Nickolas’s post.

But I wondered…what if she didn’t get a notification that she had been tagged?  The page that Nickolas had posted to was local to our town/county, whereas her post had been on a more regional one.

So I sent her a private message.  And she replied almost immediately saying that she had not seen it, and asking how she could access that info.  I copied Nickolas’s post, and along with it, sent her the contact info and hours for the animal shelter.

I’m happy to report that, yesterday morning, Crunchy, the Siamese, and her owner, Becca, were reunited.  And Becca sent me this picture of Crunchy, back at home. I’m sure she’s much more comfy on that plush rug than during her adventure in the wildlife area.

But the details of this situation are nothing less than mind boggling.

Crunchy and Becca live three hours away.  They were here visiting friends on December 10, and, while at the wildlife area, a child inadvertently left a car door open, and Crunchy escaped. December 10….that was three and a half weeks before Nickolas and his friend found her!

Unbeknownst to Becca, her mom had made the post on the lost and found pets page when Crunchy disappeared, asking folks in the area to be on the lookout.  Becca never knew about the post, and had just accepted the fact that Crunchy was lost to her forever.

That wildlife area is over a thousand acres. I’m guessing, this time of year, there aren’t many folks visiting there.  How did Crunchy survive?  She probably ate bugs, etc.  But, surely there were predators.  And then, there were the cold temperatures we’ve had.

I was so happy about how this story ended, that it was our kitty, Coco’s bedtime story last night. (post continues after this video)

As I’m sure Becca and her family are,  I am so very thankful to Nickolas and his friend for taking this baby to where she could be cared for and reunited with her owner.

Oh, and a sweet note on which to end this post:  Becca’s mom messaged me yesterday morning and said they’d like to make a donation in my name to the charity of my choice.

And I suggested our local animal shelter.

Nickolas and I have been in contact, and he said Crunchy’s family will also be making a donation in his name.

It’s just so heartwarming how our community came together to help get Crunchy back home.   Pass the tissues, please.
