The month of April is probably one of the happiest, most cheerful times of the year. Spring is bursting at the seams. For most of us, the temperatures are warmer, flowers are blooming, and grass and trees are becoming green again.
But one of our family’s darkest times came during the month of April, when we lost my sister, Rose, to domestic violence. It was April 15, 1969, and she was just 30 years old.
Our mother’s birthday was April 17. Understandably, in 1969, her birthday was non-existent. Except when the mail was delivered that day, and there was a birthday card to her from Rose. It was postmarked April 15. Mom taught everyone a lesson in strength during that time.
The members of the family old enough to remember, especially my sister, June, and I, will sense a hint of darkness today.
But the old saying is true. Time does heal the hurt. Over the years, our family has learned to, once again, enjoy the beauty that April brings.
