Monday Memories: Recent!

Rather than a far-back memory today, I’m sharing some very recent ones made in the past few days.

Motor Man has his work caught up fairly well in his shop, so last week, we took a couple of days off and headed south to the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

It had been about two and a half years since we’d been to the four-wheel drive beach in Carova, so that was one of our first adventures.  We did see two wild horses, but they weren’t in a photogenic area, so no pictures.  It was a cool, windy day, though, so we know they were hanging out back in the brush away from the ocean.

We were able to score an oceanfront room (last minute deal) at a hotel in Kill Devil Hills, so once we checked in, we took a selfie on the balcony.

The next morning, we got up in time to watch the sun rise. The colors in the early morning sky were so dramatic.

We I partook of some retail therapy that day, and we just drove around the area, including a side trip to the beautiful village of Manteo.

Later in the day, we headed south to Cape Hatteras, where we drove out on the beach. The motel we stayed at that night in Buxton was….interesting. It was ‘billed’ as an oceanfront. This was our ‘view of the ocean’:

But the room was charming enough. Later that evening, Motor Man suggested we drive to a good location to watch the sun set.

The next morning, we were up early for my trail ride with Outer Banks Equine Adventures. I’d done this almost four years ago, and it’s one of my favorite rides. The ride is a little over two hours, part of that time you’re riding through Buxton Woods, a maritime forest, and then it’s out on the beach of the Atlantic Ocean.

One interesting part of the ride takes you through a fairly large body of water.  When I did this ride four years ago, I didn’t take a camera or cell phone for obvious reasons. Right after that, I purchased a lanyard for my phone, and  that’s what I used to take this video:

Once out on the beach, our group spread out a bit, and those who wanted to were able to canter. I’m still not that comfortable with anything faster than a walk, so my horse, Jet, and I just kinda mosied along.

But it was fun riding in the surf.

Motor Man drove out on the beach to meet us, and one of our guides took photos. The weather was perfect for the ride, but with overcast skies, our photos were all a bit dark.

It was a perfect little get-away and we made some memories. But today, it’s back to work.
