Caught Red-hoofed

I lovingly call my flower beds “gypsy gardens”, and I’m reminded so often of my late Aunt Martha and all the paraphernalia she used to try to deter the deer from her flowers.

Several years ago, Motor Man and I installed  a short fence around two of my flowerbeds. We quickly learned that jumping over that fence was a small feat for the deer who visit our yard.

So we then installed strings of solar Edison lights no more than a couple of feet above the fence. And that has kept the deer out…..until the wee hours of Monday morning.

Late Sunday afternoon, I’d moved a potted begonia from the deck (which is {hopefully} protected from the deer) to this flowerbed. It was on an old rustic fern stand that I’d found at an antique shop.  As soon as I glanced out the window Monday morning, I realized something had been nibbling on that begonia. Knowing that it was up too high for a rabbit, I had a sinking feeling that a deer had found its way into the flowerbed.

And then I checked Ring camera footage from the night before:

Since then I’ve strung fishing line between the strings of Edison lights and the fence and have tied fabric strips to the fishing line to alert the deer that something is there. And  I’m channeling my inner Houdini to work my way into the flowerbeds between the fishing line and the fence.

And I just know that Aunt Martha is cheering me on in this battle.
