The Annual Halloween Haunts Post

It’s time to share again one of my favorite posts. I know we have some new followers, so if you’d like more info on the historic home featured in this video and its connection to my family, please click on the “Bacon’s Castle” category to the right.  That will take you to all previous posts that I’ve written regarding that property.

This photo was on a mantel in the house when my mom and her family moved there in 1922. My aunt Sarah, who was born there in 1925, allowed me to scan it many years ago. It was her wish that the original come to me when she passed, but as is often the case, that didn’t happen. I’m just glad to have a copy.  My son, Marshall, and I refer to this as THE Castle picture.

The following video was filmed by our local PBS station, WHRO, in Norfolk, Va. It was one of a series of vignettes, which aired during the 2007 Halloween season and featured supposedly haunted properties in our area.  Marshall was an interpreter at Bacon’s Castle at that time, and was asked to play the part of the male lead in the video.

The Castle Light, which is the subject of this video, was spoken of often in years past by my mom and her family, as well as other locals. But it isn’t depicted in the video the way I always heard it described.

As I’ve shared here before, of all the memories and experiences I have of Bacon’s Castle, this rates among the top two: the other being Motor Man’s and my wedding there in 2002.

  1. Ah, yes … a classic ! .. this was a good time – and during the days when we sort of kept the ‘haunted’ past of the Castle under wraps.. we had all heard the stories.. some of *us had seen things, but we wouldn’t really get into it unless a visitor really wanted us to *AND* had the right ‘vibe.’ Seems things are different up there these days …..

  2. Love the story of this amazing house and your family’s connection …… also think Marshall did a GREAT job in the video! I’ve been in several haunted houses/places over my many years but the one time I was at Bacon’s Castle I felt comfortable….maybe those spirits are friendly? LOL

  3. I always enjoy reading this post. It never gets old. Having grown up in a house with its own ghost, I can identify. Ours was a friendly ghost, named Richard!
