St. Patty’s Day Treasures On The Beach

Yesterday, we had SPRING: sunshine, temps in the upper 70’s and a delightful breeze.

Bev and I took advantage of the weather and spent a little time beachcombing in the afternoon. I found some green, which I thought was appropriate for St. Patrick’s Day.  The shard on the far left is textured (embossed?) and a gold-green color. It’s the thickness of a potato chip.

But, my treasure for the day was this. A Bayer aspirin bottle, which was full of sand when I found it.

It cleaned up rather nicely.

We haven’t determined an approximate date yet.  Motor Man did a little online research last night, and we think it’s possibly from the 1930’s.

In the meantime, it has a new home on the shelf in our half bath.

Random Five Friday

Happy Friday from (still) wintery southeast Virginia, where our high today is expected to be 29.  My randomness for this week:

1.) Although winter returned yesterday, on Wednesday, we had a little sunshine and temps in the 70’s. My friend, Bev and I managed to get in a shelling trip. Although our found treasures weren’t all that great,  we enjoyed walking along the shore. We call it our therapy.

2.) Motor Man and I make our bed every morning….as a general rule. Wednesday, I had an early appointment, and, before we had a chance to make the bed, Sundae decided that she wanted to be under her (blue) blankie. So that’s how we left her. When we returned a couple of hours later, not only had she emerged from her blanket, but she’d also retrieved her toy octopus and brought it up on the bed with her. She must have gotten lonely.

3.) I’m sure I’ll be hearing from Gypsy’s “fan club” if I don’t share a photo of her, too. So here she is in her favorite spot: Motor Man’s shoulder.

4.) I took this picture of the sunrise last Friday morning, It’s one of my favorite pictures I’ve taken recently. Thankfully, most of that snow is gone. Sorry, Facebrook friends, for the rerun.

5.) Motor Man and I have a “breakfast date” in the morning with friends. I’m looking forward to it!

What are you looking forward to this weekend? (Hope it includes sunshine and warm(er) temps!)

Explaining “The” Picture

Many of you guessed correctly when I posted this picture on last Friday’s Random Five:

My friend, Bev, and I had taken advantage of  a fairly warm day to go shelling. Although we use the word “shelling”, in the few months since we began this hobby, in addition to shells, we’ve also found sharks teeth, sea glass, coral and other treasures.

On the day we went last week, we both wore several layers to block the wind. Under my hood, I also had on ear muffs and a sun visor. With my sunglasses on top of my head, the photo brought back memories of “Cousin Itt” on the Addams Family.

Motor Man had some free time that day, so he accompanied us to the beach. He ventured out for a few minutes, but while waiting for us in the truck, he had access to the camera. And I’ve learned that can be dangerous…

This photo of Bev proves that sometimes we get rather serious about our beachcombing.

It just brings to mind, once again, one of my favorite quotes:

“We don’t stop playing because we grow old: we grow old because we stop playing.”     ~George Bernard Shaw

Random Five Friday

Friday once again, and time for some random thoughts:

1.) Early Tuesday morning, we had a quick shower. But then the sun came out and seemed to give our little corner of the world a “dreamy” photo effect.

cloudy morning 10-21-2014 8-06-29 AM

2.) I lost my watch a couple of days ago. It wasn’t fancy nor expensive, but I’ve worn it every day for several years. It was a bangle-type: easy to slip on and, apparently, a little too easy to slip off my wrist.

3.) Sundae continues to be an occasional undercover kitty; most evenings, she “asks” to be under her blankie. Sometimes, she starts to emerge, then stops and just lies there.  I took this with my cell phone, no flash.

4.) My friend, Bev, and I managed to squeeze in a beachcombing trip this week. It’s almost November, and we were in flip flops. (The weather took a turn for the worse the next day. Our flip-flop wearing may be over for this year.)

5.) Motor Man and I are invited to a wedding tomorrow.  We’re friends with the bride’s parents (have only met the bride once), but goodness, who doesn’t love a wedding?

Any randomness in your world today?

Random Five Friday

It’s Friday, again, after a fairly quiet week around here. Let’s see if I can come up with five randoms…

1.) Motor Man and I spent a lot of time Wednesday out on “the point” in our yard. We got up at 5:30 and watched the Blood Moon eclipse (I didn’t get a good picture.).  That evening, we watched as the International Space Station whizzed by. Did you know you can sign up for email notifications as to when the ISS will be visible in your area? My friend, Donna, clued me in about it quite awhile ago, and we’ve seen it several times, including the past three nights. It’s really amazing to watch it soar across the sky.

2.) Later Wednesday evening, I did manage to get this picture of the moon rise. As I noted on my Facebook page, I’m always reminded of the CCR song Bad Moon Rising. They sure don’t write ’em like they used to.

3.) My friend, Bev, and I went beachcombing earlier this week.  She found a sweet shard of frosted cobalt blue. Was I jealous? Nah. Well, maybe a little.  We’re really going to miss our “therapy” when winter arrives. A work boat rumbled just offshore this week during our visit.

4.) Would you be brave enough to plan an outdoor wedding on the beach in October? Saturday, when we were on the Outer Banks, we happened upon a wedding. It appears that the ceremony had just ended.  They had a picture perfect weather day. “Happy is the bride the sun shines on.”

5.) Finally, regarding the “hidden something” in the picture I posted Monday of me at the Sea Glass Festival: I was referring to the name of the booth in the picture: “Just Beachy Keen”. It seemed appropriate to stand there, since our last name is Keen, a fact some of you may not know.  A few of you picked up on that, and several of you mentioned the butterfly pin on my scarf. It isn’t sea glass; just a little scarf clip I picked up quite some time ago, and it just happened to perfectly match the scarf Pam gave me.

What’s your randomness this Friday?

Random Five Friday

Seriously. Where DOES the time go? How did it get to be Friday again so quickly? Oh well, if it’s Friday, it must be time for R5F:

1.) Earlier in the summer, I purchased a moonflower vine from our local florist. I planted it out in our yard by a little section of fence, with big plans for the vine to cover said fence. The deer were SO appreciative of the tasty greenery I planted just for them, they practically devoured it the first night. All that remained was a tiny twig, so I dug it up, re-planted it in a pot, found a small trellis, and placed it on our deck.  Safe from Bambi and family, it began to grow, and finally,we now have moonflowers.

2.) Yesterday, my friend, Bev, and I had planned to go shelling around mid-morning. While I was putting the finishing touches on my blog post around 6:30, I heard rain on the roof. Uh-oh. But I remembered my Mom’s old saying: “Rain before 7, sun by 11”. Sure enough, by 7:30, the shower had passed, and the sun was shining, but you can still see rain on the deck in this picture.

3.) We had a great shelling trip; we found a few nice shells and some sea glass and coral. After the earlier shower, it turned out to be an excellent morning for beachcombing.

4.) Last week, Motor Man and I had dinner with three of my former classmates.  I’ve been back in touch with Shirley and Donna (standing behind the two of us) for a few years now. But Rita, far left, moved out of the area when we were in elementary school. She and I hadn’t seen each other in (gasp) 50 years! Wait, that has to be a typo….

5.) And because it seems that we MUST have a kitty photo on R5F, here’s Braveheart, a BIG kitty Motor Man and I met earlier this week.  He’s the greeter at a machine shop where we’d gone to pick up a part. If you don’t pay attention to Braveheart, he reaches out his paw to let you know he doesn’t like to be neglected. He’s a gentle soul, though, and, thankfully, doesn’t scratch.

Happy weekend! I’m off to start collecting randoms for next Friday: it will be here before we know it…

Random Five Friday

1.) We had much-needed rain yesterday!  I could almost hear the grass and plants slurping it up as it fell.   No watering for me for a day or two.

2.) Between the rain showers, my friend, Bev, and I went beachcombing. We each have a little plastic sand bucket and a long-handled mini-rake. Sometimes we walk side-by-side, seeking treasures and chatting. Other times, one of us will walk up the beach ahead of the other. It’s a relaxing time, listening to the waves lap the shore and finding the occasional shard of sea glass or coral.

3.) I’m not sure if Bride Swan is moulting or was just a little over-zealous with her preening this week.

bride moulting 7-20-2014 6-52-21 PM

4.) Tuesday morning’s sunrise was photo-worthy.  Our camera was in the car, so Motor Man went to get it AND took this picture. What a guy.

jr sunrise 7-22-2014 6-13-11 AM

5.)  He and I are once again hosting my family reunion next Saturday. So begins the frequent checking of the extended weather guess forecast.  This morning, the Weather Channel’s forecast for August 2 shows….. rain. 90%.  Not “a chance of showers” or “isolated showers”, but rain. I certainly am hoping we don’t have a rerun of last year’s reunion day weather.
