Random Five Friday

Five random thoughts for the first Friday of March:

1.)  A recent particularly colorful sunrise with reflection.

2.) And a few minutes later, that beautiful morning golden light on the trees in our yard.

3.) Yesterday morning’s sky just after sunrise.  I’ve mentioned before that Motor Man enjoys the web-site “Flight Aware”, and after checking that, we determined that this flight departed JFK and was en route to the Dominican Republic.

4.) Whenever I pass by someone’s yard and see those Canada geese “statues”, I think:  I’ll trade ya.

5.)  Last weekend, a quick storm moved through our area.

And left us with some of this.  Thankfully, no damage, but a STRONG scent of pine after the storm.

Random Five Friday

Five randoms for the final Friday in April:

1.) Last weekend, there was an air show at a local Air Force Base.  Although we didn’t actually attend the show, we did stop for awhile in the area after lunch on Sunday with Motor Man’s mom.  We caught some of the stunt planes in action.

2.)  A recent soft sunrise:

3.) Gypsy and I took a few selfies one day this week.  We obviously need a little practice: neither of us knew where to look.

4.) On my way home from an appointment Wednesday afternoon, my low tire pressure warning light/alarm on my dash let me know there was a problem.  I pulled over at the village post office, and immediately upon opening my door, heard the air hissing out of the tire.  In less than a minute, this happened.  See that little silver object at the top of the tire?  That’s the business end of an X-acto knife.

I called Motor Man, and he arrived in a few minutes.  A very nice young man who lives next door to the post office saw us and offered to help. He soon had his floor jack and tools there to put the “run-flat” on until we could get to the repair shop. No repairing this tire: we had to buy a new one.

5.) We currently have two Canada Goose couples in our yard, and each couple has two goslings.  Yesterday, I glanced out to see this cute sight: a baby asleep on Mom (or Papa). The other parent  was sleeping nearby, but I couldn’t see where the second little one was.

Beauty After The Storm

Recently, after a particularly cloudy, stormy day, the sun came out. As my mom used to say: “The sun came out in time to set.”  When the sun comes out late in the day, but there are still dark clouds lingering, it’s grab-the-camera-time.

I love the gold of the marsh grass against the dark blue clouds.

For the past few weeks, we’ve had a pair of Canada geese calling our yard home.  Yes, I wish they’d move on to another location.

Our weather forecasters say we’ll have several days this week with highs in the 70’s.

I feel a severe, wonderful case of spring fever heading this way.

Random Five Friday For Mother’s Day

A special “edition” of R5F this week in honor of Mother’s Day.

1.) The reason I celebrate the holiday:

"Call your mother. Tell her you love her. Remember, you're the only person who knows what her heart sounds like from the inside." ~Rachel Wolchin

2.) Tuesday was the 20th anniversary of my mom’s death.  Losing her just a few days before Mother’s Day was especially painful. But, with time, the good memories outweigh the sadness.

"The death of a mother is the first sorrow wept without her". Unknown

3.) Stretching the Mother’s Day theme with this picture, but she IS a mom, caring for her five little ones.  Papa was just out of the shot.

4.) To celebrate Mother’s Day Sunday, our plans include breakfast with Marshall and lunch with Motor Man’s mom and sisters.

” You count the hours you could have spent with your mother, it’s a lifetime in itself.”  Mitch Albom

5.) And you know that I’ll have the camera ready for mother/son pictures.

If you still have your mom, I hope you get to spend time with her (or talk with her on the phone) Sunday.  If she’s no longer with you, I know your memories of her will be part of your day.

Random Five Friday

It was another quiet week around here…but I think I can “round up” a little randomness.

1.) This planter on Main Street in our little town has been beautiful all summer. I’m amazed that the petunias are still so pretty this late into the fall.

2.) Last weekend, I spotted this boat with the bright blue sail, and went up to the balcony to take pictures of it.  Note the Canada Geese; thankfully they’re in the water and not in our yard. As much as I dislike them, whenever I see a group of them, I find myself counting to be sure there’s an even number. Since they mate for life, I’m always sad to see an odd number. (32 in this group.)

3.) The swans haven’t been here for a couple of weeks. How do you miss an “uncuddly” animal this much?

bride swan - boat background 5-1-2014 7-39-41 PM

4.) Update to the “squirrel and biddy” story: Yesterday morning, around daybreak, I went out into our garage to get something from my car. As I was about to walk back in the house, I heard something that sounded just like someone knocking on the exterior door. Frightened, I hurried in the house, but then turned around, and, through the window of the door, saw THE squirrel up in the little planter. He was busy burying another walnut, or perhaps the same one…who knows? The sound I heard was him causing the planter to bump against the door.  At least, this time, he just moved the biddy over a little and didn’t remove it from the planter. Okay, squirrel wins, I’ll leave the walnut there.

5.) A friend posted this little video clip on her Facebook page,  so I shared it on mine. But I thought I’d also share it with my blogging friends. It’s really cute, but I have a feeling this little fella was “put up” to this by someone… Whether that was the case, or this was his idea, his parents have their hands full with him.

Happy Weekend!

Random Five Friday

Time once again for Nancy’s Random Five Friday!

1.) A thank-you to those of you who read yesterday’s blog post (before I corrected it) and didn’t mention that Valentine’s Day was actually last Friday. I had mistakenly written that it was Saturday. Motor Man pointed it out to me (by phone) and asked if I were trying to make him look bad, as in being a day late to bring me roses and a card.

2.) Unfortunately, I was on the road when he called, and unable to edit the post on my phone. Marshall and I were on our way to take Frances, a long-time friend, to breakfast.  We always enjoy visiting with her, and we think the feeling is mutual.

marshall db and frances 2-20-2014 10-53-38 AM-horz

3.)  We are hinderedaggravatedbothered, exasperated by Canada geese  in our yard. We were told that chasing them with radio control vehicles sometimes convinces them to move on to another location. So we recently bought an RC Jeep. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have enough “oomph” to travel across the grass. So Motor Man carries it and revs the engine in it while walking toward the geese. They really don’t like the sound. (Perhaps he needs to build a high-performance engine for that Jeep.)

goosebuster3 1-25-2014 1-01-29 PM

4.)  Daytona 500 on Sunday!  I’ve been to Daytona twice; Motor Man has been several times.  We’re glad that we had the opportunity to see races at some of the large tracks, but now we just like watching from the comfort of home. (But I do miss the sound of the cars and the smell of tire rubber. Yes, I’m a redneck, why do you ask?)

5.) Our forecast today is for rain and possibly severe thunderstorms. Sounds like a good day to spend (rubber) stamping in my little “craft” loft.

Stay IN The Water….Please

Today, I’m sharing photos of yesterday’s sunset.  The first shot is a bit darker, because I was having camera issues and playing with the settings.

sunset1

Our “resident” geese couple has six little ones, and they were all out for a swim last night. They’re so cute, but I do wish they (and their parents) would decide to stay in the water and out of our yard.

So much for that idea.
