Yesterday afternoon, I spent WAY too much time on an online site featuring old newspaper articles. If you live in Virginia and would like to check it out, here’s the link: https://virginiachronicle.com/?a=q&e=——-en-20–1–txt-txIN——–
I think I’ve shared here some snippets of articles I’ve found in the past in The Smithfield Times archives, but I’ve recently learned that the Sussex Surry Dispatch is also available for the years from 1933-1963. Since my family was originally from Surry County, I found quite a few articles of interest.
And I had the aching back and right arm (computer mouse usage) to show for it at the end of the day.
I found three articles I wanted to share with my readers, all relating to my two sisters.
The first was in a Surry High School article and featured a poem written by my sister, June. I never knew she wrote poetry.
And the second was an article about the prom from my sister, June’s, Junior year in high school. You may just want to skip down to near the end of the article and the paragraph that begins with the words: “The room was decorated”. My sister was quite the artist, and it was exciting to read how she contributed to the prom. I would LOVE to see that artwork, but I’m sure the chances of me ever finding a picture of it are slim to none.
And the third article was my sister, Rose’s, wedding announcement. Sadly, that marriage ended tragically, but it was still nice to see her sweet smile in the photo. And I never knew (and wonder why) she was married on a Tuesday afternoon.
My sisters were teenagers when I was born (yes, I was spoiled), so it was fascinating to discover these mentions of them in our local paper.
