My 15 Minutes

Today I’m linking up to Mama Kat’s Writing Workshop. I chose the prompt:

1.) Your 15 minutes of fame.

When I think of someone’s “15 minutes of fame”,  I usually think of an unfamous person being on tv for a few minutes, or maybe having a bit part in a movie.

But, how many minutes of fame do you have if your name and picture appear in a regional magazine?

This is how my “15 minutes” began:

The year was 2000, and I was working as a tour guide at Bacon’s Castle, my very favorite historic property.  If you’d like to read more about it, click on my Bacon’s Castle category for previous posts .

The folks at Chesapeake Bay Magazine had plans to write an article about Bacon’s Castle and came for a tour to obtain information.  And I happened to be the guide who gave them the tour. They discovered that my mother and her family lived in the house in the 1920’s and 1930’s. That led to questions about my family’s knowledge of the ghost light. After the tour,  they took pictures of me in the garden.

I had forgotten all about it, until two or three years later, when I received a call from someone working at Bacon’s Castle.  It seems that the magazine was putting final touches on the article, and they wanted to confirm my name.*

Sure enough, soon after that, we received copies of the magazine. This was the cover:

The beginning of the article:

Here’s the next segment, and there I am on the right.

Here’s the section with my little  “interview”.  As is usually the case, there are a couple of errors: my aunt Mattie wasn’t born in the house, although I did have an aunt that was.

*My last name had changed from the time of the interview until the article was published, because I had remarried. They went with the name I was using at the time of their visit.

I’m not sure this qualifies as “15 minutes of fame”, but it’s probably as close as I’ll ever get.
