Grandma’s Glads

Last week was apparently a time to think of my maternal grandmother.  I mentioned in last Monday’s post that Motor Man and I had attended an event at Bacon’s Castle on Sunday (Grandparents’ Day).

A couple of days later, I glanced out our kitchen window to see a peach-colored gladiola.  And I immediately cut it and placed it in a sweet little frosted vase that was a gift from my friend, Donna.

Although I really don’t recall planting those glad corms, obviously, I did.  And I’ll explain why.

One of my special memories of Grandma was a peach gladiola she grew in her yard. For some reason, I remember it bloomed the same week that we had revival at church. (Whether or not, she just had that one, I don’t recall.) Her roses and Sweet Williams were ever-present, and although I have wondeful memories of them, the peach glad was perhaps my favorite.

Later in the day that I brought the gladiola bloom in, I walked by our dining room, and the late afternoon sun was shining on it.

The following day, I cut one of the last Texas Star Hibiscus blooms and added it to the vase.

Peach glads still make me smile.

  1. What a wonderful memory connection. They make me smile too. Mom would have a row of glads in her garden. Now we have a ‘patch’ of glads that we enjoy too. Neat that yours is surprising you this late in the season.

  2. Those special memories will always make you smile….!

I am not sure if I have ever seen a peach color before, beautiful. Best of all the sweet memories that is included.

  5. What a warm, memory filled post. I don’t know if I have ever seen a peach glad! And how lovely you still enjoying the little vase I gifted you.
Great love story of your grandmother and her beloved flowers.
