Monday Memories: Birthday Celebration

This photo appeared a few days ago as a TBT (Throwback Thursday) memory on my Facebook page. I don’t think I’ve shared it here on the blog before.

I really should do some research on other pics of Marshall when he was a little guy to determine exactly how old he was when this was taken, but I’m thinking he was five.

These are our friends, Bev and Will, and I’m pretty sure this was taken during one of Marshall’s birthday parties. Most likely, it was either raining or uncomfortably hot and humid (June 16), for us to have had the party indoors. I  have no idea what I have in my hands or what Marshall’s doing.

I’ve mentioned Bev several times here on the blog: she and I became friends when she was just fifteen. Some time later,  she and Will were married, and they welcomed their first child, a son, the day before Marshall’s third birthday.  We’ve always thought that was so ironic, since Bev’s birthday is the day before mine, all of us in June.

Two other things that caught my eye in this photo: the ‘twist beads’ I was wearing were quite the thing then.  AND, that goldfish in the background was probably the one we had that lived FORever.  I wish I knew just how old he was when he finally went to goldfish heaven; it may have been a record.

It’s fun to look back on an old photo and remember your ‘little one’s’ childhood, a long-time friendship, and miscellaneous little things in the picture.

  1. I love how old pictures bring back such good memories.

  2. I had forgotten about that fish – definitely some sort of record there… I’m unable to determine what you have in your hands, and I have no memory of what I was up to right then … ; )

  3. I love the memories that come back when I look at pictures and this one is one of those for you for sure. The goldfish made me laugh. They hang on and on and on and on….Marshall is adorable!

  4. Ever since I can remember, I’ve been pretty matriculas about dating my photos. Where I fell short was labeling who was in the picture or where it was taken. I guess I assumed I would know. Recently I saw a photo of me with my arm around a beautiful young woman. I vaguely remember her, but I have no idea what her name is or how I knew her. Perhaps if I had written down her name on the print the rest would come to me.

    • Guess she didn’t leave much of an impression on you!! I’m sure the date is on the original picture of Marshall’s birthday celebration. This was a scan on my computer. I should have gone upstairs to my loft and pulled out the box of originals, so I’d have an exact date!

  5. Well, I remember most of it, but sometimes would rather not!

  6. Birthday celebrations are fun to look back on…..I remember those tiny bowls we would keep our goldfish in back then – surely it was boring for them in those tiny little spaces! We did the same thing with those little turtles everyone would get – little small bowls for them. Goodness what were we thinking?! Anyway, sweet photo – Marshall maybe licking icing off his fingers? LOL

  7. Old photos of when our kids were younger are so fun to look at. I remember those twist beads — I had some too! We had a goldfish that lived forever too and he got huge. I remember thinking he belonged in a pond somewhere.

  8. Oh what fun to see EVERYONE in the picture at Marshall’s event. The visual memories always make me smile. And wonderful that y’all are still friends.

  9. You’re taking a bow off a gift box! Cute pic 🙂 MJ
