Windowpane Wednesday: Great Blue

Yesterday, we had an impressive guest in the yard. I’m sure I’ve shared photos of great blue herons before, but they’re just so statuesque, I couldn’t help but snap a picture.

This was taken from our kitchen window.

It’s a bit unusual, because they usually stand right at the water’s edge, so they can do a little fishing.  Perhaps this one had his eye on one of those little crabs that burrow just this side of the marsh grass.

When one of those egrets gets ‘spooked’, they fly off (huge wingspan) with an eerie sound that makes me think of dinosaur days.

  4. That must be an amazing sound to hear. I’ve seen them fly but not heard them. They do have a huge wing span.
