Monday Memories: Summers, Faye, And Bubblegum

I’ve said before that, although Facebook has its faults, it’s also responsible for many people reconnecting with folks from their past.

That was the case with my childhood friend, Faye.  Let me set this up for you:

Back when we were young girls, Faye, who lived about an hour from my hometown, would come to visit her great aunt, who lived almost across the highway from me. Since most of the kids in our little town were boys, it just made sense that Faye and I would become friends and ‘hang out’ during those lazy summer days.

My memory is a bit fuzzy as to how old we were when we met or how many summers Faye came to visit. But there’s one memory that stands out vividly, and I mentioned it in a blog post a couple of years ago. (If you’d like to read that post, you can find it here.)

Since my Grandma lived just a few houses from us and operated a little country store, Faye and I would visit her often on those summer days.  And it was on Grandma’s screened-in porch, on that old metal glider, that Faye taught me how to blow bubbles with bubblegum. This photo was taken many years after Grandma’s death, but the screen porch is to the far right.

So…how did Faye and I reconnect after, oh probably….. at least 55 years or so? Facebook. Probably about a year or so ago, she made a sweet post about her late mother-in-law and tagged a mutual friend. And I happened to see the post.  We’ve been Facebook friends since then.

And last week, we were able to meet in person. But, before I share those photos, here are a couple of us from the era of those summer days of bubblegum.  Folks didn’t take pictures then as frequently as they do now, so we don’t have any of the two of us together. First, here’s Faye:

And me:

And here we are, all grown up. (Thanks, Motor Man, for having lunch with us and taking the pics.)

We laughed and said that this was our windblown model shot:

It’s so nice to be back in touch with Faye.  I should have brought some bubblegum, so we could have re-enacted those old summer days. (That will be for our next visit.)

  1. I remember you mentioning she taught you how to blow bubbles – I told you in return it was my Dad who taught me. Isn’t it wonderful that you and Faye got back together after all these years……friendships never die – they may DIM due to time and/or circumstances but when you see a friend after a long time it’s like you’ve NEVER been apart! Sweet!

  2. That’s a great reconnect …. and right before I got to your last caption, I started to wonder if you had taken any bubblegum !

  4. So sweet! I love it when we can connect with those we’ve lost touch with. Just recently, my long-time pen pal and I “found” each other on FB. We’ve been pen pals since we were around 10 years old or so. We’ve never met in person, but we always have stayed in touch at Christmas time. It’s a true joy to be able to “talk” with her online now. I truly don’t like FB, but I’m grateful for the opportunities to connect with others.

  5. What a sweet reconnection. So glad for both of you. Motor Man is a true sport!!!
