“What Is It” Wednesday: Time To Eat!

Since I had a favorable response from my readers after last Wednesday’s “What Is It” post, I decided to share another item today.

One of the day trips we like to take is to Hertford, NC.  There’s a little antique mall there that’s fun to explore.  Even if I don’t buy anything, there’s usually something interesting to catch my eye. And this particular trip was no different.

I was down to only a couple more booths to browse in, and hadn’t found anything that needed to come home with us.  And then I spotted this (and yes, its home is now in our kitchen):

Any ideas? It’s about nine inches long by about seven inches wide and five inches deep. And that old faded, worn blue paint is SO pretty.

Here’s a picture of those sweet little ‘doors’ open:

I wouldn’t have known what it was either, but the price tag stated that it was a lunch box.

And I had to wonder how anyone would know that? Perhaps the vendor had encountered something similar in the past. Or maybe it was bought from an estate sale, and the heirs remembered their parents passing on info that an ancestor had carried his/her lunch in this?

That’s why I think antiquing/thrifting/picking is such a fascinating hobby. When you find something like this, you can’t help but think of the folks who made it, who used it, how old it is….

And those are things we’ll most likely never know.  But that just adds to the mystique.

  1. Well as you know I love a good mystery but I don’t think I would have guessed lunch box….HOWEVER, I can imagine that someone would fashion one out of scrap lumber – old cabinet knobs, and a “handle” from a milk pail or something….. Like I said – I love a good mystery!

  2. I never would have thought it was a lunch box. My guess would have been a sewing box to hold thread, etc.
