Saturday evening, when we learned of the death of the legendary Nascar driver, Bobby Allison, my memories went back to March of 1998.
Motor Man and I had recently began seeing each other. He was invited to a book signing for a friend of his who had recently written a book about racing. And I was pleased to be included. After the book signing, several of us went to dinner at a nearby restaurant.
One of those attending was Bobby Allison. Although Motor Man and I hadn’t been dating long, I’d been a race fan since I was in my early teens, and certainly knew of the Allison family’s racing history. So it was definitely a thrill to meet him.
Since I had nothing else available, he chose to autograph the palm of my hand. (And, later, autographed the Polaroid photos.)
Don’t you just hate it when you have your eyes closed in a photo?
But this was perhaps the funniest photo taken that evening. Bobby pretended to not want Motor Man in the photo and placed his hand in front of his face.
Bobby Allison had much success in racing, but sadly lost his two sons who were also involved in the sport: one while practicing for a race, and the other in a helicopter crash at a race track.
Motor Man and I were honored to have met him.

Wonderful memories! Love the pictures.
Oh gosh, you can just tell what kind of fun guy he must have been from those photos – especially the one with his hand over Motor Man’s face!
I bet you had a tough time having to wash that hand eventually!
