Poetic Thursday: Live Cedar Trees

With all due respect to my dear friend, Pam and her kitties, Teddy and Angel Sammy, at Two Spoiled Cats, instead of writing a poem about the photo they provided this week, I decided to write one about my very early Christmas memories.

And here it is:

Live Cedar Trees

The Christmas pageant each year at church;
standing on stage, shaking like a leaf.
Trying to remember the part I was given,
the foundation of our belief.

Mom fought each year with a cedar tree,
keeping it watered and straight.
I always wanted to see Santa arrive,
but could never seem to stay up that late.

Christmas morning, what did Santa bring?
Always a doll, a tricycle one year.
Little pots and pans, a stocking with candy,
and one of my favorites: a baby Tiny Tears.

All the magic of Christmas
that I can recall
I now know wasn’t really
magic at all.

Mom’s special touch
is in each memory,
even the ones of
those live cedar trees.

Merry Christmas everyone!

  1. Love your “memory post” for Christmas. David and I talked this morning about our early memories of Christmas – it’s fun to look back at those times. I can almost smell the “real” Christmas trees my family would get every year from one of those “Christmas Tree Lots” and putting tinsel on along with shiny ornaments (many of which I saved and still use) and wondering what Santa would bring. Hope you, JR and Coco have a nice, peaceful Christmas Day!

    Hugs, Pam (and Teddy too)
