The prompt I chose today for Mama Kat’s Writer’s Workshop was:
1.) Write a post about a childhood memory as if you’re in that moment again…from the perspective of yourself as that child.
Summertime is my very favorite time of year. I love spending the day with Mama and not having to go to school.
In the morning, the sun shines on the front porch, and it’s a fun place to play. Sometimes I play with my dolls out there. My kitty, Lace, likes for me to take her for a ride in my doll stroller. I try to dress her in doll clothes, but she doesn’t like that very much.
I like to swing on the porch swing. Mama says when I was a baby, she and my sisters used to swing me to sleep there at night.
Riding my tricycle in the driveway is fun too. Sometimes my friend, Jewelsie, will ride with me. Mama says she’s my “imaginary friend”. I don’t know what that means, but it’s nice to have her to play with, since none of my friends live nearby.
On Sundays, after church, my sisters usually come to our house and bring my nieces and nephews. We really have fun playing out in the yard then. The grown-ups sit in the shade and talk. If it’s really hot, we’ll make “floats” with lime sherbert and Seven-up or Sprite. Mama says that’s a good way to cool off.
Once in awhile, we go to the beach near my sister’s house. It isn’t really a beach. It’s just a little sandy place beside the river. I can’t swim, but Mama lets me splash around at the edge of the water. She watches me every minute, though.
In the summertime, Mama moves our bed so it will be near the window, and we can get a breeze. One day, I won’t be so afraid and I’ll sleep by myself, but right now, Mama lets me sleep with her because it makes me feel safe.
Soon, summer will be over and I’ll have to go back to school. But right now, I’m going out to play on the porch. Jewelsie and Lace are waiting for me.
