These Days R5F

It’s the first Friday of fall. Let’s talk randomness:

1.) Today, I’m wishing a Happy, Happy Birthday to my dear blogging friend, Pam, who co-writes the blog, One Spoiled Cat, with her kitty, Sam.  I’m not sure how Pam and I discovered each other’s blogs, but it’s been a few years now, and we’ve become close friends. We keep in touch with frequent emails and, along with our hubbies, meet occasionally for lunch and antiquing.

2.) Our fall is beginning with blustery winds, high tides and occasional rain from a persistent storm system just off the coast.  But, we’ll take that any day over a hurricane. This was just taken after sunset Wednesday evening.

3.) Motor Man has teased me for years about how short my legs are.  (I keep reminding him that they do, in fact, reach the ground.) Gypsy thinks they’re just the right length.

4.) Yesterday, we took a little day trip (details in an upcoming post).  Along the way, we happened upon this beauty, and gave the driver a smile and a thumbs-up as we passed.

5.) We’ve had several foggy mornings in the past couple of weeks. I knew there was an old saying about how many foggy days there are in a certain month ‘determining’  how many snows there will be the following winter.  So I checked The Old Farmers Almanac, which says that month is August.  I don’t recall if or how many foggy mornings we had in August, so I guess we’ll just wait and see what the winter brings.

Happy first weekend of fall!

Random Five Friday

Happy Friday! Ready for some randomness?

1.) Tonight, our little town hosts the second annual Evening Christmas Craft and Food Market. I missed last year’s, so I’m looking forward to tonight. Plus a few friends are coming to enjoy it with me. At the Christmas Store on Main Street, there will be a special appearance by Donna Strother Deekens, the former Miller & Rhoads Snow Queen, who will be signing copies of her book, “The Real Santa of Miller & Rhoads”.  For those of you not from this area, the Santa at Miller & Rhoads in Richmond was THE REAL Santa.

I found this quote from an interview with Ms. Deekens: “The children would come up to the Snow Queen first, and she would chat with them and find out their names and put them at ease. [The Snow Queen would relay the child’s name to Santa using a special “connection,” which is still a secret to the general public.] Then Santa would be able to call over the child [by name]…”

Marshall’s first grade class visited the REAL Santa.

2.) Speaking of Santa, I saw this picture on the internet yesterday and wanted to share it. The newborn’s name is Scarlett, and she fell asleep just as it was time for her to visit Santa, so he improvised. I’m guessing this Santa loves his job.

3.) Sundae loves her job as Christmas tree inspector.  When we put up our tree this week, she was VERY interested, so much so that a few of the ornaments were soon moved to higher branches.

4.) Once again, I’m using Random Five Friday to convey special birthday wishes. My friend, Linda’s, birthday is tomorrow. Linda and I met in 1997, when I went to work with her. I changed jobs three years later, but our friendship has continued.

5.) And Sunday is my sister, June’s, birthday. (She’s known me quite a bit longer than Linda has.)

Christmas happenings and birthdays make for a fun Random Five Friday. Your turn: feel free to share your randomness!

Random Five Friday

Since it’s Friday, here are five random thoughts:

1.) Fire on the water? No, just the early morning sun, peeking under the clouds last Sunday.

2.) Today is my friend, Doris’s, birthday. Happy Birthday, Doris! I’m looking forward to celebrating with you next week.

3.) Bride and Groom swans made a brief appearance here yesterday.  It’s probably been two months since we’ve seen them, and no, they didn’t divulge any info about where they’ve been.

4.) There’s a story behind this picture, and I’ll share it in a blog post next week.  Any guesses?

5.) With the holidays approaching, I may be taking a day off from blogging here and there.  So if you’re a regular reader, and there’s no post, not to worry.

Feel free to share your randoms. Happy Weekend!

And The Wish Goes To…

One of the bonuses of writing a blog is that it provides a special way to say Happy Birthday to friends and family members.

In the three years since my classmate, Donna, and I reconnected, she’s been mentioned in several of my blog posts.

There have been many lunches, antiquing trips and feeding of horses in those three years.

She’s the reason for my addiction to sea glass.

Donna keeps me informed as to when the International Space Station will be visible in our area.

And she is one of the few people I know to have actually turned the tables on Motor Man and “gotten him” with one of his own practical jokes.

Our little group, including our friends, Shirley and Linda, celebrates every chance we get.

Focusing On The HAPPY

Recently, the news seems to be more depressing – and frightening- than ever. I don’t need to go into detail; our world is so small, you can’t help but hear or read about all that’s happening.

So today, I’ve decided to focus on the HAPPY, as in HAPPY BIRTHDAYS: two of them, in fact.

My dear friend, Pam, has a birthday today, and I’m wishing I didn’t live so far away, so I could help her celebrate. But I’ve promised her that we’ll have a big celebration the next time we’re together, which, I hope will be soon. If you don’t already follow her her cat, Sam’s, blog, One Spoiled Cat, how about stopping by today and leaving her a birthday wish?

Also, celebrating his very FIRST birthday today, is my great, great nephew, Jase, whom you may recall I met for the first time in June, when he and his parents visited from the west coast.

Happy Birthday, Jase! Play us some HAPPY music!

Yep, today I’m avoiding the news (as much as possible) and focusing on the HAPPY.
