Cold Day: Warm Friends

Since I’ve already shared all the randomness in our world this week,  rather than a Random Five Friday, I thought I’d share a little about the adventure we had yesterday.

If you’ve been following this blog for any length of time, you will recall that one of my dearest blogging friends is Pam (whose cat, Sammy, is the “author” of One Spoiled Cat).  Pam and I email each other every day, and she and her husband, Dave, have met with Motor Man and me several times for lunch and antiquing.

Yesterday, we, once again, met in Hanover for lunch at Hanover Tavern.  It was a frigid day with high temps in the mid 20’s.

We didn’t ask anyone to take a picture of the four of us, so we did the next best thing: took photos of each other.

When Pam took our picture, she suggested that I give Motor Man a little smooch;  I thought it sounded like a good idea.

After leaving the Tavern, we drove a few miles to Cold Harbor Antiques, where we enjoyed browsing the many booths. Pam and I both decided that, given the opportunity, she and I could spend an entire day there.

But, let me share with you just what a sweet and thoughtful friend Pam is. Before Christmas, I shared a picture in a blog post of the Charlie Brown tree that I had bought a couple of years ago for my cousin’s room at the convalescent center.

Yesterday, when we exchanged gifts with Pam and Dave, this was my Christmas card and the bag she used for my gift.

AND, since Pam has heard so much about all my shelling trips with my friend, Bev, this was my gift: a sweet little ceramic bowl she bought at a craft show.  “Rise and shine! It’s beach walkin’ time!”

Meeting good friends for lunch and antiquing was a fun way to spend such a cold day.

Antiquing, Lunch And A Visit With Santa

As mentioned in Friday’s post, my friends and I had a girls’ day out on Saturday. And there was a bonus: we had a chauffeur – AND photographer – (Motor Man).

Our first stop was at a consignment shop owned and operated by a schoolmate whom we hadn’t seen in years. Unfortunately, he was out of the shop on Saturday, conducting an estate sale. It’s a beautiful shop, and all four of us made purchases.

My purchase was this set of three adorable tin angels.  Once home, I placed them on our mantle, with battery operated votives behind each of them.

The next stop was beautiful historic Hanover Tavern. You may recall that Motor Man and I have been there on two other occasions.  Saturday’s visit was the first for our friends. We had a delicious brunch: pumpkin spice French toast for some of us…yum.

It was perfect timing for our trip to the Tavern: Santa was there! And even though we weren’t dressed as festively as this little girl at a nearby table…

…we DID have our picture taken with Santa. I was nominated to sit beside him (when everyone else ran to stand behind him). So as I sat down, I whispered to him: “The one who sits by Santa gets the most presents, right?”. And, of course, he agreed.

It was a fun day spent with friends and a special way to kick off the Christmas season!

Friends, Kitties And Treasures

You may recall that a few weeks ago,  Motor Man and I met my blogging friend, Georgette, and members of her family in Hanover  Va, for lunch at Hanover Tavern.

That day, Motor Man also stopped me by Through The Garden Gate Antique Mall, located just a few miles from the Tavern.

I mentioned all this to another blogging friend, Pam, mom to Sammy, One Spoiled Cat. Since the distance to Hanover is about the same for Motor Man and me as it is for Pam and her hubby, Dave, we decided that it would be a good destination for a visit. And yesterday, we did just that.

We met in the parking lot of the antique mall, arriving a few minutes before they opened.

Pam and I meandered around together, while the guys (as guys will do) made quick work of the mall. Motor Man quickly returned to the area where Pam and I were browsing when he heard us “oohing” and “aahing” excitedly. He knew that I was responsible for most of the oohs and ahs. THIS was what I had found (this picture was taken in the parking lot after my purchase):

A vintage rubber stamp set, with LOTS of stamps…some images, some words, in a neat old wooden box. I can’t wait to try them with my ink pads. I bought a couple of other small items, which I’ll tell you about in a future post. Pam and Dave bought a picture that reminded them of their kitty, Sam.

We then traveled the few miles to Hanover Tavern, where we enjoyed a yummy lunch and had a very nice visit. Pam asked for a picture of us.

And I returned the favor by taking this one of her and hubby, Dave.

And, of course, we had to have one of the four of us together.

Pam has been a good friend for several years (ever since we “met” in this wonderful blogosphere). We don’t get to see each other in person too often, but when we do, it’s always a good time.

And then, we all went home to our respective kitties and answered to them for our whereabouts all day.

Wednesday In Hanover

Yesterday, Motor Man and I traveled a couple of hours north to Hanover Courthouse, Virginia.

The reason for the trip was to meet and have lunch with blogger,  Georgette Sullins. We’ve been following each other’s blogs for a couple of years, but hadn’t ever met.  Motor Man and I were a little early for lunch, so we drove around the area for awhile. And I found a few photo ops.

An antique shop (sadly, not open) in a charming old country store building.

And this sign post, covered in tennis shoes. Later, when we arrived at the restaurant for lunch, we asked our hostess about it and learned the sad story. In January, a popular jogger (34 years old, wife and mother of three young children) was struck and killed while jogging in the area. The tennis shoe-covered post is a tribute to her.

The restaurant where we had lunch was historic Hanover Tavern; the earliest surviving sections date to 1791.

Georgette was joined by her daughter, son-in-law and eighteen month old grandson. It was great to finally meet in person. (Funny thing: Motor Man was taking pictures of us with our camera, Georgette’s daughter was taking pictures with hers, and her son-in-law had his cell phone. We felt like celebrities, but none of my photos show us both looking in the same direction!)

The food was yummy, the tavern was beautiful, and it was so special to meet Georgette and her family.
