My Life In Songs

One of the prompts for this week’s Mama Kat’s Writers Workshop struck my fancy.

5.) List the songs that tell your life story (so far).

So, here they are, in chronological order:

1.) Diana by Paul Anka.  Of course, Paul didn’t realize when he wrote this song for me that I spell my name with two “N’s”, but I forgave him. “Please stay with me, Diana.”

2.) Little Sister by Elvis Presley. Since my two sisters were teenagers when I was born, this seems an appropriate song for my early life. “…I used to pull your pigtails, and pinch your turned-up nose.”

3.) Sounds Of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel. The song for all those days in school when I was too shy to speak up. “Hear my words that I might teach you. Take my arms that I might reach you. But my words, like silent raindrops fell.  And echoed in the wells of silence.”

4.) Brown-Eyed Girl by Van MorrisonFinally! Someone noticed us browneyed girls. “…all along the waterfall, with you, my brown-eyed girl.”

5.) Another Day by Paul McCartney.  The song for my years working as a secretary. “Slipping into stockings, stepping into shoes, dipping in the pocket of her raincoat. It’s just another day.”

6.) Rings by Cymarron. Love and marriage. “Ring, ring, golden ring, around the sun, around your pretty finger.”

7.) Danny’s Song by Kenny Loggins.  Ah, yes, the summer Marshall was born. “People smile and tell me I’m the lucky one. And we’ve just begun. Think I’m gonna have a son”.

8.) The Broken Road by Rascal Flatts.  For an unsettled few years.  “….I got lost a time or two, wiped my brow and kept pushing through. I couldn’t see that every sign pointed straight to you.”

9. So Happy Together by The Turtles.  The perfect song for my life these days. “And you say you belong to me and ease my mind. Imagine how the world could be, so very fine. So happy together.”

Have you ever thought about the list of songs that would define your life?
