Thankful For The Week

Last week was a busy one.  One word that would sum up the week for us is “family”.

My niece, Donna, and her son, Connor, were here from Texas.  We visited with other family members, ate (a lot), drove out in the country (a lot). We also had a private family memorial for my late sister (Donna’s mom), June.  We took pictures, but I didn’t think to ask permission from everyone to post them.

We had Thanksgiving breakfast (yes, I cooked: alert the media) around the new/ old family table.  Marshall mentioned how appropriate it was that Donna and Connor were here for its “christening”.

As I was preparing today’s post, I looked back on some photos of Donna and Connor’s previous visits.

Here’s a picture from 2008 of Marshall and Connor.

And the same two guys last week:

The first time I met Connor – in 2005. He was three.

And, again, a picture taken last week. He’s now 13.

Donna’s birthday was yesterday, but, while they were here, we celebrated early: with a birthday biscuit.

Our emotions ran the gamut last week: anticipation (of their arrival), joy, sadness (at June’s memorial AND when Donna and Connor left for home), but through it all, we were thankful.

On Their Way

Next week, I’m taking a little blogging break. You see, we have family coming in from out of town for the week.  And we’re going to be busy visiting, hugging, talking, taking pictures, hugging some more, talking some more, and taking more pictures. And eating.

So, today I’m wishing you all a Happy Thanksgiving and sharing with you one of my favorite “thankful” quotes:

“Give thanks for unknown blessings, already on their way.”

Thanksgiving, Throwback Thursday And Mama Kat’s

I agree: that’s quite a title; today’s  is a busy post here on These Days. This is the prompt I chose for today’s Mama Kat’s Writer’s Workshop:

1. Write a post, poem, or story about something you’re thankful for this Thanksgiving.

This is the Throwback Thursday portion of the post:

Marshall’s first Thanksgiving 1980

And this is the giving thanks part:

We are fortunate to have the basic essentials necessary for life: food, shelter and clothing. I would also includ “love” on that list. I am thankful to have never NOT known the love of family and friends.

And we have the extras: pets, transportation, technology (which enables us to blog), hobbies, entertainment…that add so much to our lives.

But there’s one thing that I’m especially thankful for today, and that is good health.

Some of my friends have had health scares during the past few months, one even being in ICU on life support for a few days. But, thankfully, all the scares were just that: scares. My friends are all, thankfully, doing well now.

And, just in the past week, a close family member received good test results on an MRI.

Many years ago, I read this quote, and it’s stayed with me. I wasn’t able to determine its origin; Google let me down on that one.

Good health:  rich man’s blessing, poor man’s wealth.

I hope good health is one of your blessings this Thanksgiving day.

Random Five Friday

Last night, I prepared this post for today. And as I double-checked this morning over at A Rural Journal, where Random Five Friday is hosted, I saw that Nancy is taking a little blogging break over the holidays. Oh well, here are my five random thoughts anyway….!

1.) We had a very nice Thanksgiving. Marshall came for breakfast, then later in the day, we joined Motor Man’s family for a mid-day meal.

Sundae, hiding from the camera!

2.) I feel like the old”cow’s tail”, but I just recently discovered Shutterfly. What a user- friendly site! (I’ve been ordering Christmas gifts….shhhhh.)

3.) As I was downloading pictures from my camera chip today, I came across this one. Motor Man and I were crossing the little bridge in nearby Rescue, Va one morning last week and noticed how clear and pretty the water was. So we stopped for a picture. Or two. Or ten.

4.) We’re having a few of my former classmates over tonight after dinner. Light refreshments, catching up, reminiscing. (When we’re all together, I usually laugh until my stomach hurts.) I’m making party meatballs, using a recipe I’ve had for over 30 years. Yummy!

5.) I’m planning to start decorating for Christmas this weekend.  Just a couple of weeks ago, I was dreading the whole process, but now, for some reason, I’m looking forward to it!

Thanksgiving And Throwback Thursday

This “vintage” photo seemed an appropriate one to share on Thanksgiving Day.

dbandcolonialgentleman_Snapseed-001

This was taken in 1994 during the Olden Days Festival in our hometown.  I had dressed up for the occasion, and apparently, so had this gentleman. I don’t know who he was (George Washington, perhaps?): someone just thought we should have our picture taken together.

On a more serious note,  I wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving. Motor Man and I are grateful to be spending much of the day with family.

To give thanks in solitude is enough.
Thanksgiving has wings and goes where it must go.
Your  prayer knows much more about it than you do.

Random Five Friday

I just love Random Five Fridays. Here are five of my thoughts today:

1.) Thinking of Thanksgiving next week, I wish I could once again taste my Mom’s homemade dressing (we never called it stuffing). It was so good, I’d eat it cold, right out of the fridge.

2.) Tomorrow, I’m planning another antiquing trip with my friends, Donna and Shirley. Donna recently sent me this picture of her kitty, Dreamsicle, perched on the hitching post. She was a feral kitty, and Donna tamed her.

3.) Yesterday, my sister, June, and I spent an hour just visiting and chatting. Even though we e-mail each other everyday, it was nice to catch up in person.

4.) I’ve been friends for quite some time with Pam (mom to Sammy, a.k.a. One Spoiled Cat). Earlier this week, Pam, and her husband, Dave, along with Dave’s brother and his wife, visited Williamsburg. Wednesday night, Motor Man and I joined them for dinner at Shields Tavern. Delicious dinner, wonderful atmosphere and great company!

5.) As a fifth-grader on the school playground, I heard that President Kennedy had been assassinated. Realizing that was 50 years ago today makes me feel my age more than event I can ever recall.

Thankful

As so many of you are doing today, I’m giving special thanks for all the blessings in my life.

And spending the day with two of those blessings.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.
