Time for poetry on this last Thursday of February. As we do each week, we’re joining our friend, Pam, and her ginger kitties, Teddy and Angel Sammy, at Two Spoiled Cats for Poetic Thursday.
This is the picture they chose for our inspiration this week:
And here’s my poem:
The Mercantile
Well, ‘how do’, Miz Mae, haven’t seen you for a spell;
hope you and the family have all been well.
Guess Ben’s busy out there on the farm
Say, did that liniment help the pain in his arm?
I’m sure those young’uns are good help with chores.
My boys are working some here at the store.
So what brings you in: wire or some nails,
brushes, soap, or a new milking pail?
Give my best to your Ben, he’s a good man.
I’ll charge this to you; y’all just pay when you can.”
Today’s photo reminded me of an old ledger I found many years ago at what used to be a pharmacy here in town. One of the accounts belonged to my maternal grandfather and dates from 1917. You can read my blog post about it (from 2011) by clicking here.
