Time for poetry on this last Thursday of February. As we do each week, we’re joining our friend, Pam, and her ginger kitties, Teddy and Angel Sammy, at Two Spoiled Cats for Poetic Thursday.
This is the picture they chose for our inspiration this week:
And here’s my poem:
The Mercantile
Well, ‘how do’, Miz Mae, haven’t seen you for a spell;
hope you and the family have all been well.
Guess Ben’s busy out there on the farm
Say, did that liniment help the pain in his arm?
I’m sure those young’uns are good help with chores.
My boys are working some here at the store.
So what brings you in: wire or some nails,
brushes, soap, or a new milking pail?
Give my best to your Ben, he’s a good man.
I’ll charge this to you; y’all just pay when you can.”
Today’s photo reminded me of an old ledger I found many years ago at what used to be a pharmacy here in town. One of the accounts belonged to my maternal grandfather and dates from 1917. You can read my blog post about it (from 2011) by clicking here.
~These Days Of Mine~
PERFECT!!! Again, you’ve captured the the spirit of the day. It reminds of the Isle of Wight Museum’s Country Store too. Love the family tie in.
This poem was perfect!
Well done. Brought back memories.
Great poem – just the right “flavor” for the photo too. They were the good old days – you could count on getting the things you needed whether you had the money for them or not….pay when you can….trust….true caring. Yep – good old days indeed.
Pam
Bravo ! – you’ve ‘ nailed ‘ it once again ; )
& featured the family .. just right !
I love how you include your family when you can in your poems. I so remember the country stores in Surry & Smithfield. Good memories. Another GREAT poem!!!
What a perfect story poem for the picture, brings it to life, and I can’t stop looking at all the detail!
That is a great poem. I find those links to the past very interesting.
I don’t know how you do it, but you nail the perfect poem for the photo every time!
