Poetic Thursday: The Gardener

Thursdays mean time for poetry here on These Days.  Our friend, Pam, and her kitties, Teddy and Angel Sammy, at Two Spoiled Cats, host Poetic Thursday each week and gave us this photo to inspire us:

This was a fun poem for me to write, because I love flowers and most aspects of gardening.

Here’s my poem:

The Gardener

A sweet little house with a yard full of flowers,
and a shaded corner to while away the hours.

Oh, look! There’s a weed I need to pull,
and check to see that the birdbaths are full.

The bird feeders are empty again,
those are hungry little feathered friends.

My gardening glove has a hole in the thumb,
that’s why I’m wearing mismatched ones.

Roses to cut, blooms to deadhead,
and I need to mulch that last flowerbed.

Check the gauge, thank you, Lord, for the rain.
Do I hear thunder in the distance again?

Join you for dinner? Sorry, I can’t;
there are more flowers I need to plant.

I’ll be up in the morning before the sun,
because work in the yard is never done.

  1. Excellent job – you’ve described the labor of love that a garden is perfectly. At my age now I’ve reduced my “labor” to porch plants and deck plants but I’ve spent many an hour out in a big garden and loved every minute of it….then. Thanks for having poetic fun with us every week!!!

  2. Love your poem — it’s perfect for the photo and you too! And isn’t that little house with a flower garden just lovely?

  3. That is a terrific poem. Our mom is an avid gardener, and can relate to the fact that the work is never done She chuckled at the mismatched gardening glove, as she does that all the time. 4. That’s a lot of work – but your love for it shows … and for your yard, too !

  5. A True Gardner Lover’s poem. And the garden gives so much more than the work it demands.
