Random Five Friday

Once again, it’s time for some Friday randomness:

1.) On Wednesday of this week, I missed a very “impawtant” milestone:  the 2-year anniversary of the day Gypsy came to live with us. Yes, she still loves to cuddle on Motor Man’s chest, but it’s a little more uncomfortable for him than it was at one time.

2.) Some folks have a dog waiting for them in the yard when they get home…This is what sometimes awaits us.

3.) Easiest cake ever: one box angel food cake mix and one can of pie filling. Stir together and bake in a 9 x 13 pan at 350 degrees for approximately 30 minutes. When I make it with apple pie filling, I top it with walnut pieces before baking.

4.) A storm moved “down river” late yesterday afternoon, giving us minimal rain, but impressive scenery.

5.) Yes, I’m still peeved that they’ve destroyed nearly all my plants, but this is, perhaps, one of the sweetest deer pictures I’ve ever taken: baby nuzzling mom.

Five Photos, Five Stories – Day 2

While scrolling through the pictures on our computer, looking for ideas for this challenge, I happened upon this one from just about a year ago:

swans2 5-20-2014 7-49-48 PM

It ‘s probably been six or eight months since I’ve seen either of the swans. I’m hoping that they’re just “hanging out” uptown upriver.  I keep watching for them, hoping that, as in the past, they’ll just be here one day, waiting for their bread.

The swans have been visiting for several years. They’ve been “guests” at family reunions and two weddings that have taken place here.

I’m  hoping they return soon; our summer yard isn’t the same without them.

The rules of Five Photos; Five Stories are to post a photo a day for five consecutive days and attach a story to the photo.  It can be fiction or non-fiction, a poem or a short paragraph.  Oh yes, and each day nominate another blogger for the challenge.  Today, I’m tagging Adrienne at My Memory Art.

Unrest In The Swan World

As I mentioned last week, the “juvenile” swan is becoming a regular visitor. And, I think I can safely say that it is a male. And that, although we didn’t know for sure when we named the black swan “Groom”, we apparently were right on the money with that one.

As far as we can tell by looking out the window, all three swans get along fairly well as long as food isn’t involved. As soon as I go out with bread, however, young swan’s welcome is quickly cut short.

This was last week, when Groom was attempting to shoo away the newcomer.

Sunday morning: and although this is not a good picture, you get the idea.

The one who didn’t get the idea, however, was the young swan. Again and again, Groom would chase him to the far end of our yard, and when Groom turned around to come back my way, the “young’un” was right behind him.

I do wish they could make peace. I keep telling them that we have plenty of bread for everyone.

Meanwhile, Bride Swan muttered: “Men!”…..

….and, while they unsuccessfully attempted to settle their differences, she helped herself to all the bread!

Random Five Friday

The last Random Five Friday before Christmas. Has the year gone by as quickly for you as it has for me?  –sigh-  Here’s a little randomness:

1.) The juvenile mute swan visited again earlier this week.  And, along with her this time was Bride Swan.  If the younger one is going to be a regular here, I guess I need to name him/her.  And I’m hoping he/she learns some manners soon: he/she wasn’t sharing the bread too well that day with Bride Swan. And perhaps I need to research whether it’s possible to determine swan gender?

2.) Also visiting this week was my niece and her son, Jase.  Have I mentioned that he’s my great great nephew? And we took a selfie!

3.) Sundae had a visitor this week, too. Well, sort of.

4.) Motor Man and I visited Santa this week. Sort of.

5.) And the seemingly obligatory Friday marina photo – taken before sunrise on Monday.

Happy weekend! Will it be a relaxing one for you or hectic with last minute preparations?

Random Five Friday

It was another quiet week around here…but I think I can “round up” a little randomness.

1.) This planter on Main Street in our little town has been beautiful all summer. I’m amazed that the petunias are still so pretty this late into the fall.

2.) Last weekend, I spotted this boat with the bright blue sail, and went up to the balcony to take pictures of it.  Note the Canada Geese; thankfully they’re in the water and not in our yard. As much as I dislike them, whenever I see a group of them, I find myself counting to be sure there’s an even number. Since they mate for life, I’m always sad to see an odd number. (32 in this group.)

3.) The swans haven’t been here for a couple of weeks. How do you miss an “uncuddly” animal this much?

4.) Update to the “squirrel and biddy” story: Yesterday morning, around daybreak, I went out into our garage to get something from my car. As I was about to walk back in the house, I heard something that sounded just like someone knocking on the exterior door. Frightened, I hurried in the house, but then turned around, and, through the window of the door, saw THE squirrel up in the little planter. He was busy burying another walnut, or perhaps the same one…who knows? The sound I heard was him causing the planter to bump against the door.  At least, this time, he just moved the biddy over a little and didn’t remove it from the planter. Okay, squirrel wins, I’ll leave the walnut there.

5.) A friend posted this little video clip on her Facebook page,  so I shared it on mine. But I thought I’d also share it with my blogging friends. It’s really cute, but I have a feeling this little fella was “put up” to this by someone… Whether that was the case, or this was his idea, his parents have their hands full with him.

Happy Weekend!

Random Five Friday

It’s Friday again, and I have some random thoughts which I will now share.

1.) In addition to the old rubber stamp set, I also found this vintage child’s chair while antiquing on Wednesday. AND the sweet little tea kettle, which I placed beside a regular sized one. They both have the same shape spout. You just know “that ol moss” will soon be planted in that little one, too.

2.) And speaking of the rubber stamps, Marshall began researching that wooden box they were in. He’s still investigating, but it seems that it was a kit used in some sort of testing. And, as you can see by the label, it was made by the C. H. Stoetling Company. Best of all, it was made in the U.S.A.  If we find out more about it, I’ll let you know.

label 8-20-2014 1-53-18 PM

3.) The swans have been visiting us for several years, and Groom Swan is definitely the friendlier of the two.  Bride Swan has always been a bit aloof, although she does let me get fairly close to her when she’s in our yard. But one day last week, she actually took about four steps toward me. And allowed her photo to be taken.

4.) Since I haven’t shared a sunrise photo recently…

5.) And last (AND least, as far as pleasantries), Motor Man and I both have dental appointments today for fillings.  You just know how much we’re looking forward to that.

Feel free to share your randomness, and, hopefully, yours doesn’t include the dentist.
