Last summer, when Motor Man and I took the helicopter tour of the Outer Banks, we noticed that they also offered bi-plane rides. (I must admit that this was higher up on Motor Man’s list of adventures than mine.) But for various reasons, we didn’t get to have that experience last summer.
Recently, on a gorgeous day, we called and arranged a flight. If you’re ever in the Outer Banks and want an air tour, we can definitely recommend these folks: Coastal Helicopter or OBX Bi-planes.
Before the flight, our pilot, Larry, took a picture of Motor Man and me.
He helped us with our “soft helmets” and seat belts, and it was time for another pic just before take-off.
We saw shipwrecks, dolphins and fishing boats. We flew over the little fishing village of Wanchese.
Then on to Rodanthe and by Bodie Lighthouse.
Although we’ve taken several helicopter tours and been on both commercial airliners as well as smaller planes, this was our first time in an open cock-pit. It wasn’t nearly as scary as I had thought it might be. Windy, yes. Loud, yes. But not scary.

Open cockpit flying is – well – “real” flying – you do feel like you’re at one with the wind and the sky. You know I love flying too. You had a perfect day for your flight.

So glad you took this trip so that I could enjoy it secondhand. It brought back many happy memories of a holiday spent on OBX. It looked like a wonderful way to spend some time down there. If I should ever get back It would certainly be on my “to do list”.

Soooo cool! What fun you two have on your adventures! I can only imagine how amazing it was to experience that bi-plane ride; I’d do it for sure. You know what I loved about your video? The sights were beautiful, yes. It was fun to see you taking photos, yes. But the thing I loved was how Motor Man had his arm of protection around you in the beginning of the flight. You have such a keeper there, Dianna! ♥
