Welcome to another Poetic Thursday here at These Days. We’re once again joining Pam, Angel Sammy and Teddy for poetry over at Two Spoiled Cats.
This is the photo inspiration we were given for this week’s poem:
I wasn’t familiar with Lillian Boyer until I saw this photo and did some research. She was an amazing young woman, and you can read about her by clicking here.
Here’s my poem:
Winging It
Girl, were you not afraid of anything?
Second time in a plane, and you walk on the wing?
Waitressing left you unfulfilled,
but hanging from a plane provided a thrill.
Known as “Queen of the Air” and “The Girl of Nerve”,
your name was known all over the world.
Folks came to see you at air shows and fairs;
eyes to the skies, they stood and stared.
You had no fear, but they had it for you,
and prayed for your safety each time that you flew.
So young and so brave, you were having fun,
but new safety laws passed, and your career was done.
Then, many years later, in an old vintage plane,
our young-at-heart girl soared once again.
I also discovered this You-tube of some of her amazing stunts. It’s about 16 1/2 minutes, but I can promise you that you’ll be amazed at what you see. (Oh, and that, most likely, it will make your palms clammy.)
Also, this is an interesting article about her going for a plane ride when she was in her 80’s.

WOW!! On Lillian’s feats and your poem. She was one brave lady! Your poem explored both sides of her act – her performance and the audience’s reaction. YES!! Clammy hands and admiration for her gutsy nerve.
