California Dreamin’

It’s confession time here on These Days: Motor Man and I went on a trip last week. Across the country. To California.

He needed to go there on a little business. Our friends, Bev and Bill had never been. They had a time share, we had air miles: it all came together.

The area we were in was Newport Beach, which is on the coast, about 50 miles south of Los Angeles. After we arrived, our first stop was nearby Balboa, where we rode the historic three-car ferry the short distance (less than 1000 feet) to Balboa Island.

Those homes you see in the background belong to famous folks: movie stars, clothing designers, corporate executives.

If you’re old enough to remember the old tv show, Gilligan’s Island, this area of Balboa may look a little familiar. Some of the scenes were filmed here.

We took advantage of a tour-boat cruise in that very busy harbor. (Thankfully, our tour didn’t suffer the same fate as Gilligan’s.)

And even though it isn’t Sunset Sunday here on These Days, I have to share a couple of photos of that golden hour.

Many of this week’s posts will be about our trip. I’ll try not to bore you.

  1. Oh goodie! Some scenes this week of sunny California…..this will be fun. Looks like you had a perfect day for cruising around Balboa. Love the golden hour shot with the little sailboat and the setting sun. Yay! Welcome home……no doubt Sundae missed Motor Mommy and Motor Man….so did we…….;)

  3. Ah! I am so jealous. I’ve been as far as Vegas, twice, but have not yet made it to California! Look forward to seeing more of your photos. 🙂

  4. Those shots of CA warmed me up a little…it’s cold here this morning!!
Glad you’re home and I know Sundae girl is, too!

  5. This area is very close to where I was born…my family lived there several years.

  6. Oh my…Newport Beach is where CA daughter lives. You kept your secret well. Now if you stayed at the hotel where she works that would have been even more of a coincidence. (giggle)

  7. How fun! Love all these shots — especially the one taken through the life raft. Good eye! Can’t wait to hear more about your adventure.

  8. Oh my – boredome NOT possible! What a fun adventure!

  9. Bored no way. Share on!
My grandparents had a condo in Newport Beach in the late 60’s through the early 80’s, about a 1/2 block off the beach….spent many a day playing beach baby there.
Hope you made it over to Catalina!

I love the Gilligan Island one. I’m amazed at how big the sun looks on the horizon. Great sunset capture. I true feather in your sunrise/sunset cap. 😉

  16. Some great ones here .. and I know you’ve got quite a few to choose from! I enjoyed all of the picture message updates from the trip – & look forward to the upcoming blogs !! And Sundae missed you, no doubt !

  17. Looks like you had good weather too! They call it Sunny California for a reason. I road that ferry most mornings for 6 months when I lived on the island. I didn’t have a car and so I road the ferry to Newport Beach to catch a ride to college. Hitch hiking is pretty much how I got around. I’m glad to say I never had a bad experience…only good ones! Having a boyfriend with a car was always a plus too! I’m assuming you guys rented a car. It’s the only way to get around in CA! I can’t wait to hear all your tales!

  18. Yay! Pictures!! 😀 It looks so warm and lovely there. Hope you brought some of that back with you. What a blessing in how your trip came together.

  19. So glad you didn’t take Gilligan’s “three hour tour” and end up on a desert isle! Great pictures — can’t wait to see more and hear about your trip.

  21. I would love to go to sunny and warmer California:) Perfect timing:)

  22. Lovely shots! The gorgeous blue skies and warm temps must have been heavenly.
With sights like that you wonder why Gilligan ever left the shore for a three hour tour. 🙂

Remember the barn we both posted with the Hermitage ad on the side? A road ran in front of that barn. Hubby and I followed it a short way and that’s where I found the barn I posted this week.

  23. A great little getaway…don’t you just love it when a plan comes together!

  24. That last picture is just gorgeous. I’m glad you got to get away for a few days.
