Barns And Smoke Signals

If you’re a regular reader (thank you), you’re probably wondering if we found any barns while we were in California last week.

And the answer is “yes, we did”.

And it’s all because of a scheduling issue with a train ride we planned to take out of Fillmore, California, which is about a hundred miles northwest of where we were staying. The train ride didn’t happen, but we still had a nice day.

These barns were near Fillmore.

I don’t think this one is being still being used.

I liked this red barn because of the old truck to the left….and the orange tree on the right.

Motor Man and I disagreed about whether or not this is – or ever was – a barn.

And even though there isn’t a barn in this next picture, I wanted to share it. The mountains were so beautiful on our trip that day, I was taking pictures as we drove down the highway. This is one of those “surprise” photos. When I uploaded my pictures to the computer, I realized the cloud behind the mountain made it appear as though someone were sending a smoke signal.

And this all reminds me of one of my favorite quotes: “Life with you is like a road trip. We may not always know exactly where we’re headed, but it’s a sweet ride”.

  1. Wonderful photos, Dianna! I have to agree about that one, though – you have to wonder if it was ever a barn! It certainly is the worse for wear! I love the smoke signals…wonder what they are saying?

  2. Some interesting old barns for sure….that first one looks abandoned (and drafty!), it’s hard to tell about that one little building’s past; and no wonder you liked the red barn with the orange tree! Are you sure that “cloud” isn’t a smoke signal??? LOL Great photos – beautiful landscapes….

  3. That very last one looks like a chicken coop to me 🙂 Neat that the red barn photo included an orange tree!

  4. I never even thought about barns in California…You have given me cause to stop and rethink California completely!

  5. hmmm…I wonder what they did in those barns? Cattle, fruit …gold …
    …just kidding.

  6. oh you were back in my home state! i like that cute little building, barn or not!

  7. We see so much of urban CA on tv that I, at least, forget there’s a lot of rural area in CA, too. Nice to see barns from the other side of the country!

  8. Nice barn shots…love the smoke signal too!

  9. that one barn roof is really something! 🙂

  10. Well, the “unknown” thing is certainly at LEAST some sore of shed, isn’t it? Where’s the door?

  11. You took some interesting photos on your trip! The last photo is especially nice with the “smoke signal.” I loved seeing an orange tree in third photo, you certainly don’t see many of those near barns! 🙂

  12. I’m glad you got to see some of the country around CA. There still is lots of it to see when you get out of the city! Great photos!

  13. How do you know that someone wasn’t sending smoke signals????? 🙂

  14. You picked a great series here! Love the slope of the roof on the first one, and I’m still in the process of trying to figure out just what that “shack” is or was… And since I like mystery, I’m going to go with that being a smoke signal in the last pic 😉

  15. I was surprised to learn of a California barn, also. Beautiful scenery, unlike what we “see” of California most of the time. I’m sorry you didn’t get to take the train ride, I’m sure you were disappointed; but it looks like the day turned out well. I love the quote at the end–and the smoke signal. 🙂

  16. Very nice photos.

    Regards and best wishes

  17. They are all good but I like the red barn best!

  18. You captured some great shots….love the orange tree! Old barns are so interesting….our barn where I live was built in 1909. It is large and will hold a 100 ton of hay upstairs. I loved playing in it growing up as my horse was either in the barn or right outside in the pasture…I love horses:) My Dad remembered my Grandpa having a 100 head of work horses here for the farming. Dad and his older brother would ride one of the horses bareback down to the Columbia River which is about 30 miles from the house. Of course the other thing I love about old barns is the awesome wood. Fortunately our barn is solid and in good shape as we always took care of it.

  19. how absolutely beautiful! ah and that sky is intensely blue….Kate Kresse

  20. Oh bummer about the train ride that didn’t happen. Leaves me wondering what route you were going to take. That most certainly does look like a smoke signal…funny.
Sure do miss those mountains and western skies. Nice.

  21. great shots. love the sky … wow, just beautiful. (:

  22. I would love to explore those barns….like the smoke signal!

  23. well…first of all, this is my fourth visit here today ~ I keep getting interrupted before I can leave a comment. Reminds me of what we see out the windows as we drive through Oregon….can’t wait for our trip this summer. I also love the element of surprise when our photos reveal things to us we didn’t know were there!!

  24. I hope you got some of those good Fillmore avocados!

  25. You found some great ones!

  26. I bet you were the only person scouring CA for barns. LOL And the payoff is ours to share, thanks to your lovely pics.

  27. The shed, barn… shack… whatever it is, made me laugh. But what a magnificent view!

  28. I like that quote, nice one!

I like that ol truck in the 3rd shot, too, but you lost me for a sec on the ‘orange tree’… I was looking for an orange colored tree, like autumn leaves or something… then, I saw the ‘oranges’! LoL! Not used to seeing ‘orange trees’

I see what you mean about the cloud looking like smoke signals… cool optical illusion shot!

    Thanks for joining =)

  29. Wonderful barns & beautiful scenery. And such good fun. 🙂

Barns, barns everywhere. I agree with June you never see that side of California on TV. Great shots.
