Valentine Surprises

I returned home from a long lunch with friends yesterday afternoon to find that Motor Man (who had briefly come home prior to attending a meeting), had left a surprise for me on the desk in our bedroom.

When he first brought the balloons into our room,  they scared Sundae so badly that she ran from the room and hid. Motor Man wasn’t able to find her before leaving for his meeting. She found various hiding spots during the remainder of the day.  We’d find her, she’d cower, then run and find another hiding spot.

When we returned home from dinner, I found her upstairs, about as far from our bedroom as possible. (Apparently this was a better hiding spot before I turned on the lights.)

She’s on a cedar chest that Motor Man made in shop when he was in high school. The quilt she’s lying on is dated 1940, and I bought the child’s parasol at a second-hand shop several years ago.

She was okay with me petting her. So I decided we’d have a little photo shoot under the parasol. But Sundae kept an ever vigilant eye to the door for balloons.

Motor Man really felt badly about Sundae’s response to his surprise.

We moved the balloons to the garage, and Sundae finally ventured back to our bedroom late last night, still on high alert.

So to recap: Motor Man surprised me with balloons, he surprised Sundae with the balloons, and she surprised us both with her reaction to the balloons.

It was a surprise-filled Valentine’s Day for the Motor family.

  1. He’s so thoughtful! You are a lucky gal!

  2. What a sweet surprise for you – but poor Sundae…who knew balloons could be so threatening?! I love the photos with the umbrella. She has that long-suffering “I will let you do this because I am very patient” look. I love it!

  3. LOL! Well, if it’s any consolation, Sam wouldn’t have liked the balloons either. But I bet YOU did! Good for MM surprising you like that. Sundae found a nice spot to hide though…..and you got some pretty shots of her but I daresay once the balloons were out of sight she looked a LOT more relaxed!

  4. And BJ would have thought the balloons were for her and not paid a bit of attention to them!! Just the difference in our kitty-girls. NOW if they were plants or flowers……!!!

  5. What a fun surprise! Think of the next round of fun when you inhale the helium in the balloons and talk to Sundae…

  6. What a sweet surprise!

  7. Awe ~ who could have ever guessed!?! Sounds like you had a nice Valentine’s day. The old parasol is really lovely, and makes for a beautiful back drop for your beautiful kitty. I also adore the little desks on top of your desk – very fun!

  8. Cute post Dianna and great pictures. I think Sundae has captured my heart. Just look at that sweet Fuzz Face.

  9. Who would have thought? Did she think she would fly away? One thing though, she’s a good traveler, right? On the road or at home, life is an adventure.

  10. Lucky you!
We had a cat that loved balloons because she loved to play with the ribbon. Sometimes she would get a hold of the ribbon and carry it in her mouth with the balloon following. It was always so cute.

  11. These pictures are adorable! Looks like a very professional setting.

  12. I agree, beautiful photos of Sundae. Looks like she is posing for her Valentine.

  13. Poor little girl! Frankie did the same thing when balloons arrived at our house – he slinked so low we called a “low rider.” I’m glad you removed them — and that she ventured back out.
    Fun post! 🙂 MJ

  14. Silly cat…can’t blame her though…lot of our horses would have the same reaction. Very sweet thought from Motor Man. You did get some adorable pictures of her because of the whole “ordeal” 🙂

  15. How wonderful to have the surprise waiting for you! And I couldn’t help noticing the sweet miniature pieces of furniture on your desk. Could you tell us about them sometime.

Sundae is just too much! Those were darling pictures of her!

  16. too funny – the balloons are terrifying but the parasol is shelter. 🙂

  17. I had wondered if this would be today’s post !? What gets me is that she has no problem with mini RC helicopters buzzing overhead and crashing to the floor all around her ??!! Maybe she just has globophobia … look it up !!

  18. That couldn’t have been a better picture of Sundae if you staged it!

  19. Cute photos! My Stormy would have not rested until she had gotten to the ribbons on the balloon and then would have played with them and probably have destroyed the whole setup! LOL! I love the color on your bedroom wall.

  20. Surprises all around! Great Valentines Day.

  21. I’m sure you enjoyed that surprise much more than Sundae did, but sweet of MM to surprise you with those fun balloons. 🙂

  22. Aw Motor man is such a sweetie to surprise you with the balloons. I love that you moved them to the garage so Sundae wouldn’t be scared anymore. Sundae is adorable under the umbrella. She’s a gorgeous model. 🙂

  24. Poor kitty. Makes one wonder if she had a bad experience with balloons at one time. So glad she has you to love her now.

  25. Lovely and heartfelt surprise … poor Sundae.

  26. It appears that Sundae has globophobia…the fear of balloons. It’s a real phobia. Look it up!
